Pickpick

I wanted to love this book but it reminded me so much of The Hunger Games, I ended up feeling like it lacked originality and missed many opportunities. I liked the story: girls and one boy compete in a magical competition to become the king of Spain‘s magician, at a time when the Inquisition was still quite a threat to witches. The Familiar, as in the title, is the main character‘s “coach” through the games. I was sad the Inquisition played ⬇️

Texreader such a minor role in the book. I‘ve read books about the inquisition in #Spain and its Jews. It‘s a sad history that is worth reminding the world about now. So it‘s an entertaining read but if I gave a title to my review it would be: Missed Opportunities. #foodandlit @Catsandbooks 16h

Spanish food for #foodandlit. Chocolate tres leches cake was a hit. Chicken paella, the kids loved the chicken more than the rice. @Texreader @Catsandbooks

Texreader Oh I‘ll take the cake!! 😋 16h

I finished A Heart so White on Friday. It wasn't bad by any stretch, but it didn't speak to me. A shame because the main character is an interpreter & I love reading about linguists 😑
Today, I made fideuà, a Catalan dish similar to paella, but with pasta instead of rice. I first ate it on holiday in Sitges, and have been making it from time to time ever since: it's a good Sunday lunch option for us!

Pickpick

This is a book with very little plot and lots of stream of consciousness. A woman is intrigued by a couple she doesn‘t know but meets every day in a breakfast place in Madrid. One day the husband is killed and she can‘t stop herself from talking to the woman.
Not much more happens yet it is an engaging read with some interesting thoughts.

Librarybelle Hooray! I‘m still contemplating what to read for this prompt 5d

sarahbarnes This sounds very intriguing. I remember reading another book by the author years ago, and now can‘t remember the title. 5d
BarbaraBB @Dilara I tried that one once but it is such a chunkster and I didn‘t dare to continue! 5d

Mehso-so

I flew through this book (hehe pun!) while travelling to Malmö for Eurovision. It‘s for this month‘s #foodandlit Spain. Written by a spanish author, it tells the story of an archeologist who moves from Barcelona to London to find her luck and ends up in a bookstore. It has a very cozy atmosphere in this rainy London but I guess not much of the story will stick with me.

I'm ready for book four of The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, but I'm also not ready to read Carlos Ruiz Zafon's final novel. After this, all I'll have left to explore for the first time is a collection of short stories set in this world and one more unrelated YA book.
Traveling solo to San Antonio, TX for work while nursing the tail end of a cold is a great time to make some headway.
#foodandlit #spain

emz711 It's not his final novel! This one is. Labyrinth may be my favorite though 7d
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @emz711 Yes, that's the collection of stories I have, along with this YA novel. 6d
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @emz711 I only read about 25 pages of Labyrinth so far, but I've highlighted so many of Fermin's words of wisdom! 🤣 He is quite possibly my favorite literary character ever. 6d
emz711 @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick yup he's up there for sure 6d

As a Texas Longhorn I‘m not sure I can tolerate a book where a character is going to A&M. The Longhorns have what they believe to be a healthy rivalry against Texas A&M, but I‘ve learned recently from parents whose kids go there, A&M actually has a Freshman orientation about how much they have to hate the Longhorns. It‘s really weird and a lot of wasted energy to encourage hate. 😕

#foodandlit #Spain @Catsandbooks

Smrloomis Huh, I thought it was a more healthy rivalry too… encouraging it in a negative way is just bizarre! 1w
