Mollyanna This is a great one! I have Shrines of Gaiety currently checked out from the library, so that will probably be my choice. 1w
majkia I've got Bright Young Dead by Jessica Fellowes I'll try to get to. 1w
Amiable And unfortunately too often those of us who do know history still have to repeat it because of the uneducated. 😖 1w

Pickpick

Nicely transcribed account using his memories, journals and rediscovered diaries, and detailing his travels in pre WW2 Germany and Austria regions. Obviously of the era, thus slightly cringy at times, but such a seemingly gentle and innocent time, so much trust in oneself and others. Yet a few years later, atrocity.

Crazeedi This sounds like I need to read! 4mo

#SpringSkies #AboutArt @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

I am reading this book as a year-long read, 2 masterpieces per week. I‘m learning so much! Rick Steves writes in a very reader-friendly style, explaining why each piece is important. It‘s like a mini Art History class!

Eggs What a wonderful idea 🖼️ 8mo
Desha Love this! 💗 8mo
mabell Great idea! 8mo
julieclair @Eggs @Desha @mabell Because I‘m reading the book so slowly, I think I‘m retaining more of the info than I would if I read it straight through. This old brain needs time for stuff to sink in, lol. 😂 8mo
Eggs @julieclair I hear ya🤪 8mo

Camping this weekend and I brought along this little book to get started on planning our honeymoon trip. I'm getting excited! 8 months to go 😄
Hit me with your recs for books set in Scotland to read before our trip or places to see while we're there!

TheBookHippie How fun! 9mo
Kitta Trainspotting is a fairly obvious suggestion but it‘s a tough read as it‘s in Scot‘s dialect! Ian rankin if you like crime, Iain Banks for speculative fiction, and How to be Both by Ali Smith or Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart for literary fiction! I used to live in Scotland and it was amazing. Have a great time! 9mo
Kitta Oh wait How to be both is just by a Scottish author not set in Scotland 😆 9mo

Kitta Most of Ali Smith‘s books are set in Cambridge, where she lives 9mo
peanutnine @Kitta oooh thank you!!! 9mo
vonnie862 We did Scotland last summer and loved it! How long are you going to be there? 9mo
peanutnine @vonnie862 two weeks! 9mo
vonnie862 @peanutnine that's how long I was there for and did so much. If you're interested in my itinerary, you can email me. My email is my litsy handle plus Gmail dot com. 9mo

Pickpick

I picked this title up after it was referenced in a couple other travelogues. He goes on foot, has some of the languages and adopts numerous others, and ends up staying on in Central Europe, living there many years after, until the war.

He alternates among easygoing narrative, charming descriptions of the people he encounters, & florid architectural descriptions.
Skim the architecture, but don‘t miss the footnotes! So many unexpected anecdotes.
