I really enjoyed this. An artist couple living in isolation on Cape Cod (the real life artists Jo and Edward Hopper) get drawn into the lives of two boys and the extended family. The boys are heartbreaking and delightful; I loved seeing artist Mr Aitch get drawn out of himself by them. I pretty much hated everyone else, but in the best bookish way. There‘s a lot not told, it‘s left to the reader to interpret. It‘s slow, thoughtful and gentle.

squirrelbrain Love that cover - very Hopper-esque. 2w
sarahbarnes Sounds intriguing! And agree with @squirrelbrain - I was thinking the same thing. 2w

A collection of stories, each based on a painting by Edward Hopper 1882-1967. This painting is called Automat (food/drink vending machine of early 20th century). Fascinating stories🧡

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 3mo
Eggs @TheBookgeekFrau It‘s awesome how the authors “see” stories unfold around the image 💕 3mo
rwmg Barbara Pym has quite a few scenes in automats.

I don't know the author, but I do like Hopper's pictures. They are immediately recognisable and give such play to the imagination.

Eggs @rwmg Not familiar with Pym, but an automat is a great setting for stories. 3mo

I‘m in love with the concept, and there are some great names on the list, but somehow this has still been languishing on my TBR for a few years.

With a calm, flowing text, this #PictureBook bio looks at Edward Hopper and his somewhat slow rise to fame in the art world. I really like the illustrations complementing Hopper‘s actual works as the text describes Hopper‘s life and feelings. Bio and bibliography at the end provide more in-depth info on Hopper and his works. #BBRC #LetterE

JamieArc I recently read the tagged book of short stories where the author chose a Hopper painting and wrote a story inspired by it. Some were great, some were meh, BUT it was so fun to keep flipping to the painting, copied at the beginning of the story, to see what was being referenced. 1y

The concept of this book of short stories is fascinating to me: each author choosing an Edward Hopper painting (shown at the beginning of each story) and writing a short story about it. While I only really enjoyed several of these stories, the concept kept me fascinated, constantly flipping to the painting as the story detailed it. Includes Stephen King, Joyce Carol Oates, Lee Child, and Megan Abbott among others. Read for #Booked2023

Cinfhen Cool concept, indeed!!! And some great authors in the collaboration 💕 2y

I may love to plan reading as much as I love reading and owning books. I came across this YouTube video where she talks about her strategy that enables her to read more. So I upped my game, got a Trello account, and now have an amazing visual reading tracker. I can see what I‘m currently reading, what‘s next, and create labels so I can keep track of reading challenges. Just another great way to avoid work during the day 😂 Youtube link below.

JamieArc Anyone else use something like this? 2y
Ruthiella I‘m pretty sure I‘ve seen other Littens mention Trello. I too spent quite a lot of time THINKING about reading rather than actually reading. 😆 2y
dabbe Looks interesting! I currently use a spreadsheet, but I might have to give Trello a try! Thanks! 😊💚🤗 2y

This book could have kept going! There are so many more fabulous Edward Hopper paintings that could have inspired more great stories. This was a fantastic collection, combining two things I love--Edward Hopper and short stories. #storyaday2023

My son bought the book/catalog that accompanied the Whitney‘s exhibit we saw last weekend in NYC. Although it is no stand in for the exhibit itself, the book is a lovely reminder of paintings, drawings, sketches we saw. I love love his use of bold, contrasting colors.

BarbaraBB Terrific. I can‘t get enough of looking at his work. 2y
