I went overboard at the charity shop's book sale but there was a lot more choice than usual on the English book shelves. I think someone (probably American) must have moved away.
I left all the autobiographies of US politicians and business people and all the romances for others....
pickI love anything Alice Roberts does. Her descriptions and explanation of archaeology and history are so enlightening and captivating on TV, and just as good in book form. Absolutely brilliant.
pickIf you want to learn about the Picts, this is the book to go for. But I'd only recommend it if you're a history buff, because it's heavy on wars and names and the writing style a little dry. I wanted to learn more about the normal folk, but it seems like there isn't a lot of data just yet. There is a bit of this in the afterword of the 2016 edition.
I may have or have not ordered another book by this author 😉

pickThere are so many places and times I‘d want to visit if time travel was a thing but this is not one of them. The book gives a clear picture of a small village during the Middle Ages. There are a few moments of pleasure but it was mostly a time of every moment being about the survival of you, your family and your fellow villagers. pickHaving taught BEOWULF for a number of years to my sophomore honors, why didn't I have them read this, too? This book is not simply a retelling of BEOWULF from the monster's point of view; it is highly intellectual and philosophical as Grendel seeks to find some sort of meaning to his life. Drawn to and repulsed by humans, he reminds me of Frankenstein's creature, who also seeks the purpose to his existence. ⬇️
