Christmas Fix | Lucy Score
post image
Pickpick

With Christmas stories, both movies and books, my favorites will always be the ones that build on the foundation of the Holiday. Where the storyline can't just edit out a few scenes or chitchat for the story/characters to easily be transported to another season.

This wasn't festive throughout, yet it would have been weird if it had been, due to the disaster.

👇

AnnCrystal No, this was not Christmassy in that way. This story was incredibly more than about just celebrating.

It is about showing “Good Will“ towards neighbors and strangers, about that special kind of “Hope“ and “Faith in the Unbelievable“ that the magic of Christmastime inspires in many, and about what the “Magic of Christmas“ could mean for a child.

👇

AnnCrystal I can watch Christmas rom-coms and Christmas dramas non-stop, yet I usually struggle reading these because romance and drama are normally way outside my reading genres. While it took until chapter three to find this interesting, it truly tells about the strength of Lucy Score's storytelling power to be able to pull me into this story so incredibly.

AnnCrystal My mom's tragic stories about growing up with an abusive, acholic mother did echo as I read Noah's backstory and how it shaped his character. I believe Lucy Score wrote Noah with respect to her character and to her readers. The facts were light, yet heavily written into the story. Someone with more personal experiences with an abusive, acholic parent may struggle.

👇

AnnCrystal I can say that this does make the second book in my reading journey to make me cry. Noah did renew/reinforce my understanding and appreciation for my mom.

While this book was not about the True meaning of Christmas in the religious sense, nor the Santa-kind of Magic of Christmas. What this did capture is the essence of Christmas.

👇

AnnCrystal This was a haters to lovers rom-com. Yet it was wonderfully more. It had the best kind of ingredient that can be woven into any story, Hope.

The ending was perfect ☺️📚🌲💖🎄💝💝💝.

I‘ve loved or really liked almost all of the other books I‘ve read by Cusk, but this didn‘t quite make it for me. Sadly. I felt kept at a distance, & that might have been intentional

At university Micheal is invited home to one of his friends, Adam, for the weekend. Adam‘s family seems so perfect. Years later, married & with a kid Micheal visits Adam‘s family again, to help with the lambing. Adam‘s family may not be as perfect as he once thought

sarahbarnes Ah good to know - I had my eye on this one. I like the cover though. 1d

Cute epistolary novel about two people who connect through an online dating site. Izzy lives in North Carolina and Brodie lives on a tiny island. I loved their mutual Lord of the Rings obsession and passion for books. I did feel like it should‘ve been edited down and quite a bit of family back-and-forth could‘ve been cut. A fun read with a subplot of great family supporting each other, just went on a bit too long.

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 A book I never would have picked up if not for the #ToB25 short list! Unique structure of telling the stories if 8 teenage girl boxers as they fight in matches at a tournament in Reno. It was interesting enough while reading, but I finished it a few weeks ago and none of the characters or stories stayed with me. Soft pick.

AmyG I found the uniqueness the best part of this book. 1w
fredthemoose @AmyG totally agree! That will stick with me in a way the actual stories haven‘t. 1w

Summerwater | Sarah Moss

I did do a #bookspin list at the beginning of the month and never posted it. I saw that Summerwater (an old fave from my #roll100) and Shanghailanders (a new find at BN) were chosen.

Things are still crazy here. We‘ve gotten Dad mostly settled in the nursing home (after his second major stroke), and Mom or I is visiting every day. Today, I got clearance to bring Molly, and she came with me. It‘s just still a lot logistically and emotionally. ⬇️

Megabooks I spend more time than I‘d like distractedly watch reels on instagram. (Feel free to follow me there - megabooksreads.) I‘ve finished a few books this month. Mainly more lighthearted stuff. I enjoyed Alton Brown‘s new essay collection. I‘ll tag it here. Idk folks. Sometimes life just throws you crappy curveballs, 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 2w
Megabooks @PuddleJumper I also really enjoyed my #roll100 reread of the early @AardvarkBookClub pick 2w

Scochrane26 So sorry to hear about your dad. Mine has dementia & parkinsons—he‘s still at home but may end up in a nursing home at some point. It‘s a lot to cope with—reels & lighthearted reads may be all you can handle right now. 2w

TheAromaofBooks It's so hard when you can no longer do the caregiving yourself, still feeling like you should. I hope you all are able to find a new routine that works!!! 2w
Megabooks @Scochrane26 I'm very sorry to hear that. Managing a parent's healthcare needs can be very overwhelming. We've been able to care for dad at home for five years after his first stroke and through bladder cancer, but in the nursing home, he is seeing PT, OT, and speech therapy every day but Sunday. In home, it would just be once or twice a week. We're hoping he can gain back enough function to come home again. That is our goal! 2w

Hooked_on_books I think you‘re in Kentucky and it looks like it‘s a mess. I hope you and yours are ok with the storms. (On top of everything you‘re already dealing with.) 5d
Megabooks @Hooked_on_books thanks so much for checking in. I‘m in west Kentucky, and the east is the worst hit. It‘s horrendous. The country is such a dumpster fire now. 5d
Centique Im hoping your Dad is improving with the extra help Meg and that youre all safe from the floods and storm. So sorry that life is throwing curveballs at you. Sometimes reels and mindless phone games are just what you need to give your brain a rest and some distraction 💕💕 4d
Suet624 It sounds like the nursing home is good for him right now. I hope you can rest up a bit. 💕 4d
BarbaraBB Two weeks without Meg on Litsy… it‘s too long! I hope you‘ll have the energy and will to get back here soon 💕 14h

I‘m glad I finally read something by this author. I‘ll definitely read more by her.

It took a bit to settle into, because at first I didn‘t care for the main character. But once it grabbed me the story had me hooked. Very sad, lots of content warnings.

Venkman wishes I hadn‘t woken him for a photo this morning. Or is he winking at you?

Aims42 Me and Venkman are on the same page 😜🥱😴 2w

Hooked_on_books I‘ve been posting on here but not browsing much because we are finally moving! This last month has been pretty crazy with shipping out the cars and packing the container to ship all our stuff. We move at the beginning of March. I‘ll get you an address as soon as I sign up for a P.O. Box. 9h
Soubhiville @Hooked_on_books That‘s great news! I can‘t wait to hear how everything has gone with selling the farm and where you are ending up. I hope it all goes smoothly for you. It‘s been quite an adventure but I know you‘ll be glad to get to your new home. 4m

I loved this book just like I loved Laurie Frankel‘s last novel. She paints such compelling and honest portraits of families.

This book was not for me, and I‘m not sure what it was. The boxing? The writing? Where there too many boxers so we spend too little time with the boxers? I‘m don‘t know, but it was something

sarahbarnes Great review 😆. I haven‘t felt compelled to read this one. 2w
