I, Robot | Isaac Asimov

Pickpick

#ClassicLSFBC
I enjoyed these stories more than I recalled, so an upgrade to 5⭐ for me.
The last couple of stories deal with the political and economic consequences of robotic contributions to human culture and governance, with the rise of a fundamentalist Pro-Human faction being harnessed to electoral manipulation and (kind of) culture wars that sparked with contemporary relevance.
I may read "The Rest of the Robots" before the year's end.

The last story, “The Evitable War“ put me in mind of David Bowie's song “Saviour Machine“, though he had a more apocalyptic vision than Asimov: https://youtu.be/ZBO0gf27sl8?si=kfKl8TOMRxKPfIun

The_Book_Ninja I‘ve very much enjoyed your bite-sized I, Robot reviews. The pics that accompanied them were also top notch. I have Rest of the Robots. Obviously it‘s less daunting than the Lord of the Rings trilogy, so let me know when you start Rest.. and I‘ll join. Currently reading and enjoying Foundation and Empire. 4mo
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja Thank you ? You are partly responsible for the quality of pictures once I'd run out of existing images I liked on t'internet. I was inspired by your AI image mashups of musicians reading books and found an image generator. The most I can claim is having thought of prompts: I'm particularly pleased with the results for this one, "Isaac Asimov standing in front of a giant robot brain". 4mo
The_Book_Ninja @Bookwomble Good work, sir! And how appropriate to prompt a robot for robot art! 🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖 4mo

"When Bowie was on the road in those days [1976], the convoy was made up of several vehicles, including a Ford Transit that carried his gear and a trunk containing the dozens of books he refused to be parted from." ???

TrishB As it should be. 7mo
Texreader If only I could tote all my fave books everywhere I go. I guess that‘s what ebooks are for now? 7mo
Bookwomble @Texreader Well, I don't lug a chest of books around when I go on a trip, not having an entourage or roadies to carry it for me like David had, but I do generally take half a dozen or so in a separate bag 😄 7mo

Texreader @Bookwomble 👍🏻 I do always take at least two books to read. 😄 but as much as I loved the Count of Monte Cristo I‘m not lugging that chunkster!! It does beg the question, what if we end up on a deserted island? Then I‘d definitely want the Count with me for a reread! 7mo
bibliothecarivs I heard part of this show this week. Thought you'd enjoy it. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w3ct5nxk 7mo
Bookwomble @bibliothecarivs Thank you! 🧑‍🎤 I will certainly listen to it. Suzi Ronson was the wife of David's then guitarist, Mick Ronson, and was part of the mini arts commune David had set up in the early '70s. I saw yesterday that she has a memoir out about her association with David, which I guess the show is part of the promotion for 😊 7mo
Bookwomble @Texreader Or, perhaps, Robinson Crusoe? 🏝️ 7mo

#TenuousLiteraryConnection 1: The epigraph for TMWFTE is a verse by Hart Crane, who was friends with poet Samuel Loveman, who was also a friend of H. P. Lovecraft, whose story "The Statement of Randolph Carter" I've just read, in which the doomed character Harley Warren is based on Loveman. (Yes, this is exceedingly tenuous!)
#LSFBC #BooksAndBowie

Bookwomble #TenuousLiteraryConnection 2: The cover of my edition is painted by George Underwood, David Bowie's childhood friend turned album and book cover artist, whose punch to the eye during a fight over a girl caused the injury resulting in heterochromia that contributed to David's air of otherworldliness, which was part of the mystique Nicholas Reg utilised when casting him in the film adaptation as alien visitor, Thomas Jerome Newton.

BarbaraBB Interesting! And a worthy photo for your profile as well! 8mo
bibliothecarivs A striking image 8mo
Bookwomble @BarbaraBB I have it (at least the "Low" album cover version) on a t-shirt, too ? 8mo
Bookwomble @bibliothecarivs It's one of my favourite Bowie images, and I've wanted that coat since forever! 8mo

I'm up to David's 1973 album, Pin Ups, in which he glams up some of his favourite songs by bands from the '60s, some of which had played the same circuit of pubs and community centres he emerged from himself. There's a couple of bonus tracks on this disc, including Bruce Springsteen's Growing Up, which David had seen him play at Max's Kansas City a few months earlier. I love that David respects the songs while infusing them with his own energy ⚡

Bookwomble This is taking me a bit longer to read than I'd initially expected, but that's because I'm savoring it, not because it's difficult or boring 💛🧑🏼‍🎤🧡

The_Book_Ninja My mum loved David Bowie. I remember this LP sleeve was always out. I think that‘s Twiggy on the cover. She saw him live. She said his teeth were bad. That‘s my Bowie story 8mo
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja It is Twiggy, as "Twig the Wonder-Kid" ? I have to say that I preferred David's British teeth to his American teeth, but then I didn't have to live with thousands of cameras pointing specifically at me. And, your mum had great taste in music ?❤️ 8mo
BookNAround I went to college with David Bowie‘s son Duncan. He was a nice, down to earth guy. When his dad and stepmom came for his graduation, they arranged with the college to have a brief photo session for anyone to take pictures of them then so the family would be left in peace for the rest of the day since they were there to celebrate Duncan, not to be surreptitiously snapped by random strangers. I thought that was smart and realistic. 8mo
Bookwomble @BookNAround The clips I've seen of Duncan, he does come across as a grounded person. Fantastic that he got to go to college with you 😊 8mo

"Kate Moss recently [2003] did a photo shoot with Nick Knight for British Vogue and she's wearing several of my outfits from the Ziggy years... She even called me afterwards to tell me I must have been really skinny at the time! When Kate Moss phones to tell you she can't get into your clothes, you know you can't have weighed very much." ✏️

Write the following 100 times:
"I am a responsible adult with control of his finances who is not easily influenced to make rash purchases based on the books he is reading!"
? This is Ground Control to Major Tom??
? You've really made the grade ??‍?

#BooksAndBowie ?

The_Book_Ninja I can relate to the hyperfixation 8mo
LeahBergen 😆😆👏👏👏👏 8mo
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja The Bowie hyperfixation (enthusiasm? 🤔) won't be going anywhere, but I've perhaps expressed it sufficiently that for a while I won't be clogging things up with posts only tangentially book-related 😊 8mo

Bookwomble @LeahBergen The booklet states, "No musical ability required", but I'm proving that to be a marketing lie! ??? 8mo

Vinyl Finders | Southport, Merseyside, United Kingdom (Bookstore)

Pickpick

I know I'm at risk of making my Litsy feed a David Bowie channel, but I picked up a little bargain from Vinyl Finders yesterday: This box set has a 48-page booklet of rare photos and commentary on David's pivotal year of 1970, and two discs of rare recordings, some of which I don't already have. It's a great soundtrack to the Rainbowman book I'm reading about the recording of Bowie's albums 🤩 A snip for a tenner! 💸

Oops! I had a #bookcident when I went for a browse and came out with this 700-page monster! (Though, I mean, when did "a browse" ever not result in a purchase!)
It focuses on my favourite Bowie period, and is a compilation of scores of interviews with the musicians, producers, engineers, etc., who Bowie worked with, as well as the author's interviews with David over many years as a rock journalist. ???‍?

TrishB Looks great 👍🏻 9mo
Bookwomble @TrishB I've just read that it's the first in an intended three-volume work covering David's full career! 😳 A bit of an investment, but hopefully they'll be spaced out a little. 9mo
Bookwomble @TrishB Correction, it's two volumes, the original French second part was published 2022, and an English translation not yet available. Sorry to tag you with such trivia, but I struggle sometimes to not put things "right" ? 9mo
TrishB 😁 no worries! I shall be buying for hubby. 9mo

- Do we have any David Bowie music?
- Yeah, downstairs.
- Here's what we were looking for. [Cassette of "Changes"]
- ?Holy shit! This is AMAZING! ✨
- It was the first time I could ever remember hearing queer references in song lyrics.
- Bowie's music was the first that felt like MINE! My love of Bowie has long outlasted the crush that started it.

I'm only 25% through, but this book just earned its 5 stars! ???‍?

There's nothing in this for me to not like, so an entirely subjective and probably unreliable 5⭐ rating, which, despite the foregoing caveat, I'm prepared to fight you about, your choice of weapons ⚔️
Pramanik's illustrations faithfully capture David's likeness, thankfully, as anything less would have ruined it, and while it's a naturally simplified version of Roeg's multilayered masterpiece, is still a satisfying story in itself. ⬇️

Bookwomble I really enjoyed the mini-filmography at the end, containing loads of behind the scenes photos. Fully deserving of its shelf space 🧡👽🧡

The_Book_Ninja I‘m sure it‘s sacrilege to a Bowie Stan, but haven‘t they re-made this into a mini-series? 2y
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja They have. I haven't seen it as it's on Paramount+, and who has that? 🤷🏻‍♂️ I'm open to adaptations and sequels, it all depends on how well they pull it off. I like that each episode is titled from a Bowie song, so that's a good start 😊 2y

Oldschool_millenial Dug through your history to find this just to comment: have you seen the new DB movie "Moonage Daydream"? Saw it last night, and enjoyed it, even though I was never into DB (don't judge meeee!), so I figured an avid fan would enjoy it all the more 2y
Bookwomble @Oldschool_millenial I haven't seen the film, unfortunately. It wasn't showing near me. I'll hope to catch it when it streams, or when it's released on disc. I'm glad you liked it - no judgements 😁 2y
