#TBT to May of last year when I got to see the goddess Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie speak about race and feminism at my local library. She was seriously the nicest! She came despite the fact that her father had recently been kidnapped in Nigeria due to her work on feminism and criticism of Nigerian culture. She's amazing. 😍🙌🏿

Notafraidofwords Amazing. I've only read We Should All be Feminist. Her fiction has been so highly praised, I'm scared of reading them. 8y

BookishFeminist @Notafraidofwords Read it! I know you're picky but I think you will like it. If you're scared try her short stories first to get a taste of her style 8y
The Thing Around Your Neck
Notafraidofwords @BookishFeminist on my TBR it goes ! 8y
BookishFeminist @Notafraidofwords I can't wait for you to read it! I am obsessed with her writing so if you have trouble getting into it track me down and I'll sing its praises for a while. 😜 8y
sparklemotion Whoa 😱😍 8y
subwayreads @BookishFeminist I'll help you sing her praises to @Notafraidofwords - also if you haven't done so, watch her two Ted talks! "the dangers of a single story" is one of my favorite talks 8y
BookishFeminist @subwayreads @Notafraidofwords OMG THEY'RE SO GOOD. I'll post the links. 8y
BookishFeminist 📹 VIDEOS | for anyone that hasn't seen her TED talks, OMG THEY ARE EXCELLENT. The Danger of a Single Story talks about perspective in books and the press: https://www.ted.com/talks/chimamanda_adichie_the_danger_of_a_single_story?langua... & We Should All Be Feminists http://tedxtalks.ted.com/video/We-should-all-be-feminists-Chim the transcript of which is her book by the same title @Notafraidofwords 8y
We Should All Be Feminists
Theresa Like @Natafraidofwords I've only read We Should All Be Feminists. This one's on my TBR, but will likely read Purple Hibiscus first as that's in the mail & should arrive any day. 8y
BookishFeminist @Theresa That's a good choice too! It's her first. I love it. 8y
Gezemice Oh I am jealous! I only read Americanah but it was amazing. I will read more! 8y
Yellowpigeon I'm reading this now. So jealous! 8y
Bookzombie Americanah is in my current library pile! Hope to read it soon. 8y
thec0zy So jealous!! 8y
Twocougs Lucky you! 8y
StephBengtson My Nigerian coworker told me about this woman and I couldn't for the life of me remember her name until I saw your post! Thanks!! 8y
BookishFeminist @StephBengtson You're welcome!! Seriously go read everything she's written and watch the TED talks I posted above! Those are required watches! 8y
BookishFeminist @Gezemice Yes! All of her stuff is fantastic. Read it all! 8y
BookishFeminist @Yellowpiegon @Bookzombie Awesome! Glad you guys are reading this or will be soon. 😊 8y
BookishFeminist @thec0zy @Twocougs Yes! Wish you both could have joined me! My home library is awesome. They're always bringing in the best people. 8y
Twocougs @BookishFeminist wish I could have too! I did get to meet Jacqueline Woodson at Townhall in April. What a wonderful woman she is! 8y
[DELETED] 1409720085 Wow, incredible. 8y
BookishFeminist @Twocougs She's so incredible! She also came to my library when I was a kid- I remember my mom taking me and loving it but I would be floored to meet her as an adult! 8y
BookishFeminist @emilydecato she really is! 8y
Caryl Lucky, lucky you! I saw here long ago when she was here for Purple Hibiscus. So glad to see her continued success! I didn't know about her father. 😔 8y
BookishFeminist @Caryl Her father is fine! Kidnapping are sadly a regular occurrence in Nigeria especially when it's someone close to those in the public eye where they can get lots of money. Not that this makes it okay by any means, but that is why she came to do this signing. 8y
Caryl I just looked it up and read about it: http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/05/31/opinion/sunday/chimamanda-ngozi-adichie-my-... 8y
Caryl She is such a fantastic writer & person. So sorry this happened to her sweet dad. 8y
BookishFeminist @Caryl Oh thanks for that article! Yes it makes me sad. I always hate when relatives of activists have to pay the price for activism they don't even do :( Jessica Valenti is currently taking an indefinite break from Twitter because someone sent a rape threat to her 5 yo daughter and I just can't. So sad. 8y
Caryl That's horrible. 😔😔😔 8y
Caryl I bet Chimamanda's dad is so proud of her, though, you know? 8y
BookishFeminist @Caryl I bet he is, too. He seems like such a sweet, fun man. 8y
Notafraidofwords @BookishFeminist her Ted Talks are amazing. I've seen a few interviews with her. 8y
BookishFeminist @Notafraidofwords Yes! She's such a powerful speaker & does really well in interviews. 8y
Carol And all I can think of is I would love to work for a library that can bring her in!! 8y
BookishFeminist @Carol You would love it!! My library is wonderful but also has loads and loads of money. It's Arlington VA where lots of well off liberal suburbanites live outside Washington, D.C. They had Anthony Doerr, Jesmyn Ward, Judy Blume, and Julie Otsuka too within the past year or so. I don't know how they do it but I'm not complaining. 8y
Merethebookgal I need to keep better track of who's coming to speak at the Arlington libraries! 😆 Very cool! 8y
Spiderfelt What a hero and an inspiration. 8y
BookishFeminist @Merethebookgal Yes! I'll keep you posted if I hear of any good ones. My mom works there so I keep good track. 😊 8y
BookishFeminist @Spiderfelt She really is! She makes me happy to be a human. 8y
Carol @BookishFeminist 😍😍😍😍 that's a special library indeed! 8y
