I tried; I really did. I just couldn't get into this #audiobook. I hate DNFing a book, but there are too many other books I want to read. So I'm not going to struggle through something that isn't doing it for me. Maybe I'll try it again another time.

Yeah. Reread confirms, this is a book that's going to stay with me. I'm glad it's one I own, so I can revisit, probably annually. I think having experienced Tigerman by Nick Harkaway this past year, I have a new scale for 'heart-ripped out' books that affected me emotionally, but even knowing what was coming, this one still got to me. Grief, unshakeable, self-annihilating grief, is the undercurrent throughout the story, 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? if you want to investigate the other nifty things you've heard about this book, just please be aware of this too. I love the premise, the world-building, the concepts that Hall has explored here, the fun with formatting! There's a good chunk of sci-fi speculation and a liberal sprinkle of horror, but there's also Ian the cat in all his disdainful glory and a fractured love story that hurts all the more for how briefly we see glimpses of it. 1mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 As much as there's a great deal of ambiguity in the text, I think I should probably tack on a mental health concerns/suicidal ideation warning here just to be thorough. I can't guarantee you'll get out of this book what I did, but I can hope you find the experience worthwhile. Read with caution. 1mo

2.5⭐

•mystery suspense thriller•amnesia•twisty•predictable•

•I didn‘t fully see the first twist—but I easily figured out the next one, and the climantic ending was too implausible to be believed even a little.
•The narration by Kimberly M Wetherell was fine.

A little gay YA romance, Stevie has amnesia and has to remember Norah and their relationship. This was a bit too YA for me - a bit too much cheese and dramatic teens but that is on me I bought this last year on a stop over in Edmonton, I also thought it was Canadian but about half in I realized they were in Philly, so I just fully picked up the wrong book apparently and it didn't really work for me. Overall though it was fine just not my taste

2025 Reading Plans
Let the rereads commence!:
Raw Shark Texts, been thinking about it since I finished it last April, wanna do it again!
Nick Harkaway: one of, if not the FAVOURITE author, could happily reread any of his books. Will be starting with Gnomon, because it's the one I feel like I know the least.
Probably reread Wayfarers, Monk and Robot, Murderbot series. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? Main Genres for 2025: Sci-fi and Non-Fiction.
Sci-fi is the genre I consistently wanted to be reading more of this year, just had a better rate of enjoyment with the genre overall, I think making space for it, and possibly finding more of the specific type of sci-fi I enjoy will be an enjoyable challenge.

Robotswithpersonality 3/? I realized this year that long fiction books and non-fiction books both tend to take me longer to read than the standard novel size or novella, graphic novel, etc. And if there are books that will take more of my time to read, I'd rather it be non-fiction than a long novel. Statistically, my enjoyment of non-fiction has been higher than my enjoyment of long novels. 2mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/? Non-fiction has knowledge as its reward, the challenge of just finishing a long book feels pretty hollow in comparison, even if on rare occasion, the long book is also a good book.

Non fiction is also not necessarily heavy or difficult, so while I don't quite want to make it a goal, I'd like to predict a higher percentage of non-fiction reads this year than previous.
(edited) 2mo
Robotswithpersonality 5/? Going to do my darndest not to pick up as many mysteries. The vast majority fall in the 'ok' range, and now that I know I'll be devoting a bit less time to reading, I don't want to waste it on 'ok'.

Expanding interest in walking books into travel books, because that has been working well recently.
2mo
Robotswithpersonality 6/6 Want to add bird books, especially non fiction, to tracking stats, want to try more on my TBR, see what else is out there, fiction and non-fiction.

We'll see what happens! 🎆
