“Cotton Mather spoke to the same fears in 1690, when he preached on New England in a state of “distress and danger as it never saw before.” His was a law-enforcing, discipline-endorsing address; in their sins and discontents they had brought down “whole armies of Indians and Gallic blood #hounds.” The authorities had failed in protecting the flock.”

Straddling the top of the world, one foot in China and the other in Nepal, I cleared the ice from my oxygen mask, hunched a shoulder against the wind, and stared absently down at the vastness of Tibet. I understood on some dim, detached level that the sweep of #earth beneath my feet was a spectacular sight.

“To reach the foot of the mountain, I had to find a ride across twenty-five miles of saltwater and then ski thirty miles up one of these glaciers, the Baird, a valley of ice that hadn‘t seen a human #footprint, I was fairly certain, in many, many years.”

I don‘t mean to suggest, of course, that every software tycoon in Silicon Valley was born in 1955. Some weren‘t, just as not every business titan in the US was born in the mid-1830s. But there are very clearly patterns here, and what‘s striking is how little we seem to want to acknowledge them. We #pretend that success is exclusively a matter of individual merit. #QuotsyMar19 #31DaysOfNonFiction

Crude jokes were made. School-children snickered. Reporters from newspapers across the country criticized the carnival air of the proceedings and the lack of religious ritual and due #solemnity. Cremation was all but doomed to an early grave.

She was clearly very #intelligent, but her potential was stifled by poverty and her low-class status as a governess.
