The Bridge
The Bridge | Iain Banks
11 posts | 11 read | 10 to read
The man who wakes up in the extraordinary world of a bridge has amnesia, and his doctor doesn't seem to want to cure him. Does it matter? Exploring the bridge occupies most of his days. But at night there are his dreams. Dreams in which desperate men drive sealed carriages across barren mountains to a bizarre rendezvous; an illiterate barbarian storms an enchanted tower under a stream of verbal abuse; and broken men walk forever over bridges without end, taunted by visions of a doomed sexuality. Lying in bed unconscious after an accident wouldn't be much fun, you'd think. Oh yes? It depends who and what you've left behind. Which is the stranger reality, day or night? Frequently hilarious and consistently disturbing, THE BRIDGE is a novel of outrageous contrasts, constructed chaos and elegant absurdities.

Have always wanted to try one of his books. I was advised that this was a good one. I‘ve tried to get into it but I‘ve given up for the moment. I‘ll have another go in the future.

This book doesn‘t really sound like my cup of tea, but it apparently features the Forth #bridge so there‘s that. #letstravelaugust

JCPaulk I believe that was once the longest bridge in the world when built. 5y
OriginalCyn620 Pretty photo! 5y
Susanita @JCPaulk @OriginalCyn620 I didn‘t know that, but I can believe it. The bridge is impressive! 5y

Moray_Reads @andrew61 I haven't read any others either but this one blew me away. I think I have the Crow Road on my Kindle... 6y
andrew61 @Moray_Reads yes i loved the idea of a world constructed in the mind of the hero in a coma. ive only read a few including the wasp factory. I also read a great memoir about a whisky distellery tour he takes. 6y

Billypar What a 'meta' choice, bridge to a bridge- love it! 😄 6y
Billypar Well, @andrew61 if you're not sick of Lessing by now and haven't tried this one- I would recommend it (and completely different from Golden Notebook). 6y
Cinfhen Well played 6y

#GetMovin #Levels
Still trying to catch up on challenges and this had me going back through my GR history where i found this classic - a man has a car accident and whilst in a coma finds himself on a bridge of many levels which he negotiates whilst doctors try to treat him.
A brilliant book.

Centique You‘ve reminded me I need to read more Iain Banks! 7y
Moray_Reads This book is phenomenal. It's the only Banks I've read so far but I found it astonishingly good. 7y
andrew61 @Moray_Reads I've read a few including his personal account of a whisky tour - just wonder why didn't read more when he was alive. 7y

This was a library read so i haven't got a photo of the book so i found this image. I love iain banks work and am slowly making my way through it. This was brilliant.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I'm halfway through the Culture novels. He is missed. 8y
andrew61 @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I've never tried his sci fi strand, is it accessible to non sci fi readers as id like to give them a go. 8y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk Of the ones I've read Consider Phlebas and The Player of Games are great places to start. Excession and Use of Weapons are amazing but dense. I've only read his science fiction! Which of the non-M books would you recommend starting with? 8y

Pickpick

Iain Banks, what is your brain? Didn't try to follow or make sense of the narrative, just let it roll by and trusted that the threads would come together at the end. And they did. Baffling but brilliant.

Joybishoptx I love him. Need to read this. 8y
arlenefinnigan @Joybishoptx you do. It's more challenging than I'm used to (I read mostly non fiction and no sci-fi) buy it's so good. 8y

My husband is a huge Iain M Banks fan and he wanted to read some of his non-sci-fi novels so I bought him The Bridge for Christmas/Hanukkah. #recommendsday

I think the easiest people to fool are ourselves. Fooling ourselves may even be a necessary precondition for fooling others.

The electricity is off in the flat so Iain Banks, popcorn and a sunny October kitchen will have to do until the engineer arrives #weekendreading #iainbanks

Moray_Reads My first Iain Banks and what an introduction! A sad loss but he clearly left some amazing writing 8y
