All Over Creation
All Over Creation | Ruth Ozeki
A warm and witty saga about agribusiness, environmental activism, and communityfrom the celebrated author of My Year of Meats and A Tale for the Time BeingYumi Fuller hasnt set foot in her hometown of Liberty Falls, Idahoheart of the potato-farming industrysince she ran away at age fifteen. Twenty-five years later, the prodigal daughter returns to confront her dying parents, her best friend, and her conflicted past, and finds herself caught up in an altogether new drama. The post-millennial farming community has been invaded by Agribusiness forces at war with a posse of activists, the Seeds of Resistance, who travel the country in a camping car, The Spudnick, biofueled by pilfered McDonalds french-fry oil. Following her widely hailed, award-winning debut novel, My Year of Meats, Ruth Ozeki returns here to deliver a quirky cast of characters and a wickedly humorous appreciation of the foibles of corporate life, globalization, political resistance, youth culture, and aging baby boomers. All Over Creation tells a celebratory tale of the beauty of seeds, roots, and growthand the capacity for renewal that resides within us all.

The other two I‘ve read by her were home runs, but this one was more #goodnotgreat. I‘d still love to read more Ozeki, though! #AuthorAMonth

Yumi runs away from her tiny Idaho town at 14 after sleeping with a teacher. As her parents age, a neighbor takes care of them, but when their health falters she returns with three kids in tow. Meanwhile, a group of organic food activists have targeted the area to protest GMO potatoes.

Soubhiville Wow your dogwood blossoms are huge! So pretty, I love them. 😍 7mo

Definitely not Ozeki's best but still her trademark frankness and balance of bitter and sweet is too good to resist

This was a random library choice and I finished it because I'm stubborn, but it had its faults: too long, I couldn't stand the one main character and her shitty choices, and when a writer gets basic facts completely wrong, like thinking that human babies are born blind (🤯), that really pisses me off. I'm completely anti GMO. so that part was fine and done okay, just quite dated by now.

I‘m back in the #audiosewing game. This jacket‘s coming together pretty well, but I need to do some more aggressive tailoring on the back. It currently pouches out around the waist. I hate that look.

Today‘s work took me a fair ways into ALL OVER CREATION by Ruth Ozeki. Considered alongside MY YEAR OF MEATS, I figure she set out to build a career in the agricultural lit sector but did an about face. Huh.

wanderinglynn Your jacket is looking great! 3y
Tamra I wish I had that kind of talent. 3y
Eggbeater Really impressive skills! 3y
xicanti @Tamra I‘m still very much a beginner tailor, but I learn a little more with each project. 3y

Ruth Ozeki is a brilliant author; there‘s a lot to love in this one, but there were some difficulties for me around some of the terrible decision making of several characters. I also struggled to understand the big take away here. Not quite Tale for the Timebeing...

The Spudnik returns, making an appearance at Carkeek Park in north Seattle. The camouflage conceals skulls and werewolf faces. Creepy!

I have so many mixed feelings after finishing what felt like an epic odyssey with these characters. Ozeki continues to surprise and amaze me with her gift of storytelling. The elements she pulls together are fascinating, and her facility with character building is impressive. And yet, watching the main character make poor choice after poor choice was agonizing. This truly is a study in broken families and the way individuals can remake themselves.

JSW I judge people by 1) their books, 2) where they keep their books, and 3) how many books they have. 8y
Texreader I drove by a house tonight with a huge picture window with a massive filled to the brim bookcase lit up inside. I was so impressed! They have to be good people right? 8y

My lunch hour mostly consists of reading & more coffee; it's my 'me' time every day. Ozeki has become one of my favorite authors, after reading 'A Tale for the Time Being' in one sitting last summer.
