This was the book that introduced me to Helen Humphreys and her beautiful, haunting, engaging writing. The story of Annie and Eldon and Isabelle is one worth visiting (and revisiting), characters hemmed in by the expectations of their times, dreaming of lives that are more than what is possible.

pickOverall I enjoyed this book. Like I said in my last post the writing is sparse and beautiful. It wasn‘t an action packed story line but I found the development of the characters to be really good. I feel like the author could have gone just a touch further to make the ending a little more satisfying for the reader, but I‘m sure that leaving us hanging was kind of the point. As with a photograph, I feel like we didn‘t quite get the full story.
Thoroughly enjoying this book. The prose is very sparse and full of images of a childless Victorian couple and their Irish servant girl that they each hope to create their dreams in. #queerbooks #booktoteswap #catsoflitsy
