Tess, an aspiring seamstress, thinks she's had an incredibly lucky break when she is hired by famous designer Lady Lucile Duff Gordon to be her personal maid on the Titanic. Once on board, Tess catches the eye of two men--a kind sailor and an enigmatic Chicago businessman--who offer differing views of what lies ahead for her in America. But on the fourth night, disaster strikes, and amidst the chaos, Tess is one of the last people allowed on a lifeboat. The survivors are rescued and taken to New York, but when rumors begin to circulate about the choices they made, Tess is forced to confront a serious question. Did Lady Duff Gordon save herself at the expense of others? Torn between loyalty to Lucile and her growing suspicion that the media's charges might be true, Tess must decide whether to stay quiet and keep her fiery mentor's good will or face what might be true and forever change her future.

I learned about the Senate hearings on the White Star ineptitude. Never ever thought about it. So interesting. And learned about the Duff Gordons. What really happened on that lifeboat? I was glued to the text from the first page.

KristiAhlers I really enjoyed that story. I too learned a lot. 3y

Unfortunately bland. Nothing really drew me in-- the romance, Titanic drama, designer drama. Tess is bland as can be. Barely any if the characters have depth or development.

I wanted to love this book since I love historical fiction, fashion, and the Titanic, but it had a tendency to drag on. I forced myself to move forward as I hate bailing on a novel. It did receive good reviews elsewhere, so maybe it was just me.

An intimate look at surviving the Titanic. Some romance, but more about growing into who you are & your possibilities.

Very good. Enjoyed from start to finish. Liked the fact most of the main characters were based on real people gave it a bit of realism to the story. Recommend.📖📚

I'm really trying to like this book but it's just not grabbing me. It should be, given the fact that it's historical fiction and about the Titanic -2 subjects I love. Hoping it improves...

My favorite moment of the day? I'm reading in my daughter's room while she plays, suddenly I feel a little nudge and she appears next to me with her own book. She's since gotten up and down twice to get different books, but always comes back. Just warmed my heart. 💕💕📚😍

I really enjoyed this book. Whenever I found time to read it, I didn't want to put it down. At least until the last 30 pages or so. The ending felt a bit rushed and bits of it didn't really feel resolved to me. But I love Titanic stories. I just wish there were more of them.

Penny_LiteraryHoarders I liked this one too when I read it a few years ago! Haven't read any of her other stuff yet though. 8y
Em890 @Penny_LiteraryHoarders I actually just read an article about how Kate Alcott is a pen name for Patricia O'Brien because no one wanted this book because the book she wrote before this one didn't sell well. 8y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders @Em890 right?? I read that too. So bizarre!! 8y

Em890 @Penny_LiteraryHoarders I bet her previous publisher felt pretty stupid. It did pretty well and was translated into 5 languages. At least as of that article. 8y
Marla Love the cover! 8y
rubyslippersreads I didn't like this as well as I hoped to, but it did get me interested in two women with a connection to both #Titanic and The Music Man 😄 8y
Em890 @rubyslippersreads I wish it had gone into the trial a little more than it did and definitely wish it had showed some resolution with that. I feel like she pulled so many different characters into it and showed so many point of views and then did them all a real injustice by only really resolving two of them. But I will definitely have to check out The It Girls. It sounds really good. 8y
Em890 @Birdsong28 that sounds good. I added it to my TBR 7y
Birdsong28 @Em890 It is. It started me reading and loving Gill Paul so I have read most of what she has written and am waiting on her new book out in November! 📖📚 7y
