⭐⭐⭐⭐ 1/2

I've always loved the Darkling, such a great tormented character / villain (and even more after Ben Barnes played him in the tv series! ?)
This graphic novel is a glimpse in his "youth", it's a quick read and the art is really good.

bthegood Stacked, my niece and I read these! 👍 1y

A great glimpse into The Darkling's past. I hope the entire series is adapted into graphic novel.

Meh. This short story didn't add anything to the series.

A tragic backstory about the Darkling at the age of thirteen, Leigh Bardugo has delivered yet another masterpiece. When I thought I understood the Darkling and his motives, who he is and why he does what he does; then comes along this book! (or rather a short story)

Rating: 4.5/5

i.besteph (contd) This book gives us a brief glimpse on what started the Darkling's journey in becoming the 'Savior of Grisha' It's a touching story and you may find yourself pitying the Darkling (which is more than he deserves). 3y
i.besteph (contd) And for those who liked the Darkling either way (psychopaths IMO) you'll just fall in love with him even more. Either way, it‘s a touching story nevertheless and somehow odd to see the Darkling so vulnerable. I guess every villain needs an origin story and this particular prequel does NOT disappoint! 3y

Interesting enough origin story as to why The Darkling wanted to make Grisha the rulers of the land. Still doesn't mean I have to feel sorry for him, or like him, though!

This was a really short story, just a glimpse into the past of the Darkling, but I found it interesting. I‘d actually really love more stories about Baghra, I find her fascinating and this story left me really wanting to learn more about her.

*Fear is a porwerful ally, but feed it too often, make it too strong, and it will turn on you.*
This is the last story that form part of the Shadow and Bone Trilogy. And to be honest I expected more.
On the other hand I would read a entire series about the Darkling and still want more.

This was my second to last book/story for 2019.

Super short story about the Darkling from when he was a child. Not that riveting but I‘m always ready to read more about the world of the Grisha. 3/5 stars.

Snuck a little time at work when things were quiet to read this. 30 odd pages of a glimpse into the Darkling before he actually became the Darkling. Really interesting to see him as a child and the relationship between him and his mother. 4/5 🌟

Love this prequel short story about the Darkling as a boy. My only complaint is that I want more Darkling!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

Elisa The Darkling is one of my absolute favorite villains, and the only one who has made me wonder if I'd end up on the dark side😉 7y
ness Woops, I find him fascinating, too! Leigh Bardugo writes such interesting villains. @elisa 7y

I wanted to like the Darkling I really did but nope. This glimpse into his past did help me get a better understanding of him & why he became the way he did. It must have been rough for him growing up. This short did make me feel a bit sorry for him but then I think of all the trouble he caused (or will cause) & the feeling quickly passes. I understand what he was trying to accomplish but I don't care for the way he went about doing this.

So short, but I loved reading about the Darkling as a kid, now that I have finished the trilogy! (He was my favorite. Shhh.) 😊

Elisa Now *that* I have finished the trilogy ☺️ 8y

“But I cannot hate that boy and girl for what they tried to do. The way we live, the way we‘re forced to live—it makes us desperate.” --excerpt from the book

It was shorter than I thought it'd be. The last portion of it is a preview of Six of Crows. Interesting insight to the Darkling tho!
