The Gathering (Shadow House, Book 1) | Dan Poblocki
15 posts | 16 read | 8 to read
You don't just read this ghost story. You step into it. Some houses are more than just haunted... they're hungry. Dash, Dylan, Poppy, Marcus, and Azumi don't know this at first. They each think they've been summoned to Shadow House for innocent reasons. But there's nothing innocent about Shadow House. Something within its walls is wickedly wrong. Nothing -- and nobody -- can be trusted. Hallways move. Doors vanish. Ghosts appear. Children disappear. And the way out? That's disappeared, too... Enter Shadow House... if you dare. Don't just read about Shadow House -- explore its haunted depths with the free app!

I chose this for the superbly creepy cover picture. From the writing style and the age of the characters my best guess is it‘s intended audience is young MGers, but it genuinely felt too scary for most kids that age. It was a good ghost story though, with fittingly eerie photographic illustrations. #Scarathlon2022 #TeamMonsterMash @StayCurious #Spookoween2022 @TheSpineView #31by31 @Catsandbooks #PointsAThon @dieareader @GHABI4ROSES

Book 55🎧 2⭐️

Meh. More MG than YA - didn‘t have enough razzle dazzle (spook) for me. Might listen to the rest of the series, might not🤷🏼‍♀️

I listened to this one to preview it for the kiddo… it‘s a pretty scary middle grade first-in-series haunted house book, about 5 kids (ages 12-13, I think) who all get mysteriously drawn to an abandoned ‘shadow house,‘ and locked-in spookiness commences. A nice twist at the ending, and I think Jack will dig it.

Not really my kind of book, but it wasn‘t written for me, so a pick. 😃

⭐⭐⭐ I listened to this because my 13 yo daughter asked me to. It's an ok YA book. Not extreme horror, but it does have its creepy moments. There were some twists that I didn't expect either so that helped the experience. Lol On to book 2 to decide if I'll continue reading the series. 🎧 #fortheloveofkids

This is about 3 boys (2 are twins) and 2 girls that are invited to a house at Larkspur. The invitation purpose is different for each one of them. They knew each other when they arrived to the house which is empty. While they explore the house strange things happen. They discovered they have something in common to be at the house. There is a twist that I didn't expect 3.5⭐️b/c the way they arrived to the house was unrealistic they're ages 12-14

LibrarianRyan I liked this too. Haven't read the rest of the series yet. 7y
Gissy @LibrarianRyan I will order it this week to continue with the series. Did you try to enter in the website? Apparently there are some tricks to see the ghosts. ☺️ 7y
LibrarianRyan @Gissy I did when I read the book, but I read it as a galley and most of the website didn't work yet. I also listened to it , which I liked more, and the website was better than. 7y

So I have tagged book 1, but the picture is book three. It's a horror series for kids similar to goosebumps about a haunted house. I thought the first book was decent, and it's a nice change from Stein (who I love). #coverlove #kidsedition

Originally I read this book as a galley, and gave it away when I was done, and I liked it. I just finished listening to it as it was one of this year's #audiobooksync titles. I liked it more as an audiobook. But then again I suck at listening to audiobooks which is why a 4 hour book took me two weeks. But still a fun creepy listen for a family car ride.

The 1st in a series, "The Gathering" is a fun, dark ghost story for middle-schoolers, with plenty of characters to get to know & love. I wouldn't read it for pleasure, as an adult, but I think the intended audience will enjoy it quite a bit. It even comes with a downloadable choose-your-own-adventure type app! Some disturbing subject matter will keep me from recommending it to younger kids (without knowing more about what they can handle).

I cannot express how scared I got while reading this! What a way to start off 2017, with a horror book. Inbetween each chapter or so, there are creepy pictures of haunted children. I would be so frightened to turn the page because the pictures were very realistic and scary. I was feeling chills down my spine. The storyline is amazing and fast-paced. There is not one boring moment. The creepy pictures definitely enhanced my reading experience.

Overall this is not an in-depth book, or even something that stands well on its own. What brings the life into this book the the app. Normally Scholastic does a website for a book like this, but this time it has done an app. I am not a fan of an app because it puts content out of the reach of many. The app lets the reader go through the haunted house, discover clues. the story is not bad, but if you can not do the app, it looses a lot.

As much as I didn't want to lose a couple hrs of reading time, there was NO WAY I was missing the 'Witchy Dinner' one of my girlfriends was having 2night! Halloween is her jam & as far as she's concerned, it's celebrated ALL October lol. As you can see from just some of her house & food/drink decor, it was AMAZING!! And of course I snuck #Book4 in my purse & took a pic lol! Now back to the #Readathon grind!! 💀😱👻👿☻ #Deweys24HrReadathon
