A novella that will take you through the heart of Hayden's Syndrome, a terrifying disease, from its unusual and ironic origin to the frantic response of doctors, scientists and governments. And you experience the emerging society that those with the disease build for themselves--and for the rest of us.

#ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024 This prequel to Lock In is written as an oral history of the advent and progression of Haden‘s Syndrome and what has been done to assist those who have been affected with the disease.

This book is a prequel to the Lock-In series. It is very short. In fact, it reads like a teaser that someone who hasn‘t read any of the series might enjoy. I really like the Lock-In series, but this book didn‘t do much for me.

After snarfing down the two novels, I picked up this novella prequel. The “oral history” format really lends itself well to what is an extended infodump of all the information it would be impossible to cram into the first book. Also, since I am an epidemiologist I was DELIGHTED with the way Scalzi played with the science of the Haden‘s outbreak.

Thus concludes my binge through the extant Lock In series. ;)

This was really interesting. It‘s been quite a while since I read Lock In and I‘m planning on reading Head On in February, so this was a nice reminder of the world before I dive into the next full fledged novel. The format of this novella was very interesting, being a collection of interviews with different individuals involved in the various stages of the outbreak of Haden‘s Syndrome and the aftermath.

A quirky but interesting book with good commentary on disability rights. Read it in a night.
