Fanny Hill: Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure
Fanny Hill: Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure | John Cleland
Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure, popularly known as Fanny Hill, is a novel by John Cleland. Written in 1748 while Cleland was in debtor's prison in London, it is considered the first modern "erotic novel" in English, and has become a byword for the battle of censorship of erotica.

I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it (some I‘ve had so long I don‘t even remember why!) Feel free to join in!

#OnThisDay in 1966, the US Supreme Court issued its decision in the Memoirs vs Massachusetts case. The court overturned a decision by the Supreme Court of Massachusetts, and declared that John Cleland's Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure (aka Fanny Hill) was NOT obscene as it did not meet the threshold set in 1957's Roth vs the United States: “a book cannot be proscribed unless it is utterly without redeeming social value." #HistoryGetsLIT

This (erotic) novel was an unexpected choice on the syllabus of a course I am currently taking. The plot is an excuse to present a string of sex scenes, none containing actual “bad” words, but all very graphic nonetheless. I won‘t lie: I actually liked the book, especially from a scholarly perspective. For casual readers, I would only recommend it as what it is: eighteenth-century smut. Which is a weird thing to recommend, honestly.

LeahBergen I‘ve read big chunks of this and enjoyed it, too. 😆 5y
ulrichyumiodd @LeahBergen Good to know I‘m not alone! I‘m also presenting on the book in a few weeks. I mostly chose it because I didn‘t expect anyone else to - and no one did 😂 5y

I couldn‘t resist. Want so bad to show you this beautiful Bulgarian cover of ‘Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure‘

Also this book is my third book for #LitsyAtoZ reading challenge, placed under letter ‘M‘

SmartSassery I'm interested to know how you like it. 6y
Hope_a @SmartSassery This book was forbidden for a really long time, even its author was on the edge of loosing his life and was sent to prison because of it. I was curious to read this book and to see what is this fuss about. Obviously the book has a long history of researches and a whole movement because of it. Standing alone, the plot is not something to hype about. Because nowadays we are used to books like ‘50 Shades of Gray‘ and sex scenes, 6y
Hope_a @SmartSassery described so vividly is not something that will amuse us. But then, in the time when Cleland lived was completely different. Probably this is the one I loved the most - underline notes. They explained a lot. The story, plot, symbolism and you can understand why actually this book is written and what it meant back then. You can google it and read a lot of publications about the story and its symbolism. It‘s really interesting. 6y
SmartSassery Thank you so much. Now I'm really looking forward to finding and reading this one! 😍 ❤️ 6y

I‘ve just finished Cleland‘s book and it left me with mixed feelings. It is said to be a masterpiece and also it was forbidden in UK and US till end of XX century.
Really liked my Bulgarian editions (not only because its stunning cover) because it has really helpful notes under line which makes you understand the book in its deepest.

4/5 ⭐️

{#recommendation request!?} ??

My adoration of Anaïs Nin has led me to pick up and discover authors like her or similar to her style/theme of writing. I‘m becoming quite addicted to this strange new underworld of classical literature and am seeking recommendations for new books and authors to try?

I currently have books by Anaïs Nin, Henry Miller, DH Lawrence, Françoise Sagan and John Cleland. #bookaddict #booklover #bookblog #classicerotica

Weaponxgirl Have you tried this one? All I've got of the top of my head right now but give me time and I may be able to come up with something else 6y
Sophoclessweetheart @Weaponxgirl Oh! That sounds really good actually! I‘ll have to look out for a copy! Thank you Shirley! X 6y
Weaponxgirl @Sorceryandswords anytime! I also really like this one and Jean Rhys does doomed love stories very well. Both the authors life's were really wild too. They might tickle your fancy too. 6y
Sophoclessweetheart @Weaponxgirl Thank you! I‘ve heard a lot of good about Colette so I‘ll give her a try. 🖤🖤 6y

Started reading this 18th century erotica at the recommendation of a friend, and yeah, so jerk-off lit just hasn‘t changed much.

The first Little Free Library I ever saw was back in 2009 in Sarlat, France. Most of the books on offer have pretty old publication dates.

EliseWhitmore @Lindy I love that these are everywhere💗 We have one in our neighborhood and got to peruse the selections at the Harvard & MIT campuses this week 8y
Lindy @EliseWhitmore I like to peruse, and have added to some, but have yet to see a book I want to take. 8y
