The Wedding Gift | Marlen Suyapa Bodden
8 posts | 7 read | 3 to read
Set in the Deep South pre Gone with the Wind and the Civil War, The Wedding Gift is a compelling and powerful story of slavery, abuse and passion. Perfect for fans of The Help. What if, on your wedding day, you were given your sister as your slave? When wealthy plantation owner Cornelius Allen marries off his daughter Clarissa, he presents her with a wedding gift: a young slave woman called Sarah. The two girls have grown up together but their lives could not have been more different. Clarissa is white and is used to a life of privilege and ease. Sarah is black and is used to a life of slavery and hard work. When Sarah decides her future lies outside the plantation, it sets in motion a series of events that will have devastating consequences for them both.

Today‘s Prompt: YELLOW COLOR

HISTORICAL FICTION

Poignant, heartbreaking, and unfortunately true.

THE WEDDING GIFT is beautiful in the sense of how the story is told in the author's marvelous prose and flowing style, but ugly in the harshness, cruelty, and reality of the events.

Today‘s Prompt: ARROGANCE

You will hate Mr. Cornelius Allen as well as most of the male characters for their cruelty and their shallow, arrogant thinking.

I loved listening to this audiobook told from the perspective of a slave and one of her owners - they‘re both trapped by the white men in their lives, a which I always think is interesting to compare - but only one of them finds a way out.

This tis a story of our pasts we need not to repeat ever again now nor in the future. This is a story of love and hatred. This is a story of sins upon sins. This is a story of redemption....

Best book I have read in a long time. Really opens your eyes to the horrors of the African American slave trade.
