Reluctant Midwife: A Hope River Novel
Reluctant Midwife: A Hope River Novel | Patricia Harman
11 posts | 12 read | 10 to read
The Great Depression has hit West Virginia hard. Men are out of work; women struggle to feed hungry children. Luckily, Nurse Becky Myers has returned to care for them. While she can handle most situations, Becky is still uneasy helping women deliver their babies; for these mothers-to-be, she relies on an experienced midwife, her dear friend Patience Murphy.

Today‘s Prompt: LUGGAGE ON THE COVER

Babies, folks helping each other, and a difficult, but wonderful era.

One of those books you won't want to put down because the characters are so wholesome and because the story is so homey and heartwarming. Patience and Becky are characters you would want for a friend.

lynneamch Thx for the rec. I almost bailed after a few chapters, but it got much more complex and interesting. Also worthwhile example of government 's role in lifting people up.Really enjoyed the audio. 11mo

Prompt: CUT CORNERS

Patience is a midwife, and Becky is a nurse.  Both women deliver babies together and share what they have food wise and material wise to “MAKE ENDS MEET.”

It is one of those books you won't want to put down because the characters are so wholesome and because the story is so homey and heartwarming.

My feelings on this one are pretty similar to how I felt about the first one in this series. The concept is interesting and the characters are great, but the writing leaves a lot to be desired. #historicalfiction

Second in the Hope River series. I love these books so, so much. This stands alone but DO go back and read the first book! Becky and Isaac are trying to make ends meet in rural West Virginia during the Depression while Becky is also caretaker to Isaac. Not as much birth/midwifery in this one as the previous book, so broader appeal. Becky is slower to love than Patience, but she definitely gets there. Isaac is a GEM. I love every single character.

Chrissyreadit I love reading books relevant to where I live/lived- adding this now!!! How old are your big kids? This homeschool high school has me weepy with a Jr and Freshman. 6y
intothehallofbooks @Chrissyreadit If you have ties to the WV area and like historical fiction, you may REALLY love these books. The history is so rich and the setting is vibrant! My (twin) girls are sophomores and my boy is technically 8th but he has moved onto a couple of freshman courses. So yes yes I TOTALLY share in the weepiness. 6y

Enjoyed this second installment of the Hope River novels. Similar tone and similar characters as the first novel but a different perspective. Enjoyed the history, understanding of the effect of the Great Depression, and the midwifery.

Sometimes the library gods withhold their goodness from you. I must have spent an hour looking through what was available to download. I came across this one. Not a bad way to spend the day, running errands around town. Perfect for those times when you can't spend intense focus but can still follow along.

#photoadaynov16 I seriously scoured every bookshelf in my house yesterday looking for something #headless and couldn't find anything. I didn't think to check my Kindle collection. Looking for something else today, and BINGO! 👍 @RealLifeReading

This is the second book in the Hope River series and it follows Nurse Becky Myers from book 1. I enjoyed it, but thought the first book was a bit better.
