Blue Mars
Blue Mars | Kim Stanley Robinson
The red planet is red no longer, as Mars has become a perfectly inhabitable world. But while Mars flourishes, Earth isthreatened by overpopulation and ecological disaster. Soon people look to Mars as a refuge, initiating a possible interplanetary conflict, as well as political strife between the Reds, who wish to preserve the planet in its desert state, and the Green "terraformers".The ultimate fate of Earth, as well as the possibility of new explorations into the solar system, stand in the balance. From the Paperback edition.

Mehso-so

That was just, So SO MUCH. It appears that the challenge of writing about the long term effects of humanity settling on Mars was no longer enough in this last installment of the trilogy, so Robinson sprinkled in concerns about Earth and then extended out to the rest of our solar system! And of course, it's not just the political ramifications of trade or immigration between Earth and Mars, 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? or the political, economic, infrastructural and environmental situation of Mars, or impact of longevity treatments on population growth in Earth and Mars, or the 'quick decline' or memory issues being experienced by the First Hundred as even longevity treatments are not a guarantee against death or some form of mental/memory deterioration, and then exploring what that looks like and how it might be combated, 4mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? or speculating consecutively on how generations of humans would adapt physiologically and alternatively/simultaneously work to artificially modify themselves for an alien climate, there's also the multi-generational cast of characters, so that in the middle of this epic sci fi about colonizing Mars you have what could be termed multiple family sagas also occurring via alternating POVs and cameos. 4mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/? Highlights: Vlad going off on Antar about all the flaws of old capitalist system, having great answers to every tired rebuttal. As always, Nadia's POV, though didn't love how much she had to deal with political B.S. this time 'round, and Nirgal's POV, especially the visit to Earth, the overwhelmed sense of wonder. 4mo
Robotswithpersonality 5/? Robinson's descriptions, often aided by a wealth of words for different colours, make environments both familiar and alien come alive. If you want to dig into the scientific and environmental and political what ifs, I think you'll really enjoy this series. Be certain you've got a fairly high tolerance for interpersonal drama, and can survive the 90s heteronormative gender dynamics and 4mo
Robotswithpersonality 6/6 high propensity for the female characters to have manipulative, hyperemotional (one might even say hysterical), irrationally obdurate tendencies. ⚠️Child abuse
4mo

Starting the final book in this trilogy. I enjoyed Red Mars more than Green Mars, but looking forward to finishing and seeing how Blue Mars fairs. ❤️💚💙

This is the third book in the Mars Trilogy. While I enjoyed following along with the life of the surviving 100 and a few others, it was very slow and it dwelt too long on the political issues of an independent Mars. I felt it was too detailed and could have been shorter. However, the science parts were interesting. 3⭐️

TheSpineView @Amiable It was interesting. I enjoyed reading about how the author saw Mars developing as a colony of Earth. 1y

Currently reading Blue Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson. It is the 3rd book in the Mars Trilogy.

This goes perfectly with Rocket Man by Elton John. Link to lyrics below.

Loved Red Mars, Liked Green Mars, activity meh about Blue Mars.

All the political machinations and the slow pace government formation made this a hard slog. But my biggest issue is that the first 100 never grow. They are the same at 30 as they are at 230. Still unable to communicate basic things over years and decades.

I need to order the third book in this series for my husband for Christmas, but how am I supposed to do that when he has apps that track all of the packages delivered to our house? #holidaymail #seasonsreadings

Is there #LifeOnMars? Yes, once we colonise it. More importantly, how much longer will there be life on Earth? And once Mars is settled and terraformed, will we mess that up as well? This is a well read copy, but not by me. I'm too afraid of the answers to those questions, and haven't braved this final book of the trilogy. But I'll take the plunge soon. #SeptemBowie

Cathythoughts Sounds really good. Very important questions 👍 (edited) 7y
keithmalek I'll save you the trouble; humans can't survive on Mars. I know this is fiction, but the fact that people take that scenario seriously annoys me. 7y
Leniverse @keithmalek I've read the two first books, so I know how they go about terraforming Mars. Robinson did his research, but 1) we don't have the technology yet, and 2) some his trajectories have since been shown to be wrong. But: The whole point in these books isn't really "can we live on Mars", it's "can we live anywhere without fucking up". This is sci-fi as socio-political criticism etc, not just space adventure. 7y

I forgot to post for #17rainbowbooks yesterday! So a day late: OMG #bluecovers there are so many! I was literally just grabbing books out of the shelves and they were mostly blue. And then I put back those not deemed "blue enough". ?

vivastory Love the cover for Curious Incident of the Dog etc 8y
Leniverse @vivastory Ah, yes! Vintage books often have good covers! This one is cool on the back as well. I'll take some pictures. 8y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk Love that cover of The Scar!!! So much cooler than mine. 8y
Leniverse @TobeyTheScavengerMonk It's the UK edition by MacMillan. 😁I guess you have the one that looks like a building on fire with green skies. I think I prefer mine too! 8y

For @RealLifeReading #booktober #OutOfThisWorld I am spoiled for choice, but I'm going with one that can also double as #SomethingBorrowed. I've had this book for ages because I'm afraid to start it. This series made me lose faith in humanity, but the second book ended on a hopeful note. And so I've let it linger there, with this third and final part as a sort of Schrodinger's book.
