Promise Me Sunshine
Promise Me Sunshine: A heartwarming, slow-burn romance | Cara Bastone
4 posts | 4 read | 1 reading | 7 to read
How do you find yourself after you lose the one you loved the most? Grieving the loss of her best friend, a young woman struggles to live again, and finds a lot more than she bargained for in this heartwarming, slow-burn romance by the author of Ready or Not. Lenny's a bit of a mess at the moment. Her best friend, Lou, recently passed away after a battle with cancer, and her death has left Lenny feeling completely lost. She's avoiding her concerned parents, the apartment she shared with Lou, and the list of things she's supposed to do to help her live again. The only thing she can do is temporary babysitting gigs, and luckily, she just landed a great one, helping overworked, single mom Reese and her precocious daughter, Ainsley. It's not perfect: Ainsley's uncle, Miles, always seems to be around, and is kind of... a huge jerk. But if Lenny acts like she has it all together, maybe no one will notice she's falling apart. Miles sees right through her though. Turns out, he knows a lot about grief and, surprisingly, he offers her a proposition. He'll help her complete everything on her "live again" list if she'll help him connect with Ainsley and overcome his complicated relationship with Reese. Lenny doubts anything can fill the Lou has left behind, but she begins to spend more time with Miles, Lenny is surprised to discover that, sometimes, losing everything is only the first step to finding yourself, and love, again. .................... Once again, this author has wowed me with a wonderful romantic comedy that has humour, heart and a little spice. While it is predictable (it is a rom com after all), except for an adorable eight-year-old, it doesn't resort to the usual gimmicks you often see in the genre. Instead, this story about loss and grief and learning to live again has a wonderful depth, realistic characters and life lessons. Thanks to NetGalley for the digital ARC. 4.5/5

This was a lovely friends to lovers HEA. It was a super quick and easy read because it is mostly conversation. I‘m often dropping the tips of stars on romance because I‘m judgey when it comes to tropes. But I might have to add shiny tips here because the author so seamlessly avoided the miscommunication trope.

peanutnine Yesss I love this author, can't wait for my preorder to come! I also dislike the miscommunication trope 2w
marleed @peanutnine I‘m becoming less and less tolerant of that trope lately because it takes so little imagination to incorporate it into the conflict of a romance. Honestly, I appreciate a romance that doesn‘t use it all the more. 2w

Sometimes, a book finds you. That‘s the magic they possess. The perfect book for you can arrive at just the right moment, wrapping around your heart and holding space for the emotions you carry that can somehow weigh heavy and need a place to rest. This is one of those books.
This is my second Bastone read and she‘s instantly become an automatic-buy-author for me!

This lovely novel examining grief, love, and finding one's purpose is so good! Memorable, funny, and heartbreakingly sad in others, Bastone's latest doesn't disappoint. It feels authentic and effortless and doesn't shy away from real problems; you can't help but keep reading to see what happens next. Releasing on March 4, you'll want to pick this one up if you like layered romance that goes a little deeper and makes you reach for the tissues.
