Pickpick

A fictional imagining of the life of Mary Jane Kelly, known to history as the fifth & final victim of Jack the Ripper in 1888. Little is definitively known about Kelly - we are even unsure as to whether that was her real name - so there's a lot of scope.

This started off a little 'Catherine Cookson' but I was quickly drawn into Mary's story which covers her early years up until leaving the village in Wales where she was born (in this story).

OutsmartYourShelf The first part was very readable, flowed well, & keeps the reader's interest. It kept things quite simple & is, therefore, very believable. This second part of the story deals with Mary's arrival & short life in London. For me, the strength of the first part was its simplicity whereas this second part starts to wander in to the more fantastical. 17h
OutsmartYourShelf The storyline becomes populated with too many side characters, including mention of Dr Doyle & the possible inspiration for his great detective. It also becomes contrived to fit with the evidence & what is known of Kelly's last days & it becomes even more unlikely as it develops. 4🌟

TWs: violence, infidelity, scenes of a sexual nature, very strong language, minor mention of animal cruelty/death.
