This is a slow burn Romantasy. Vassa‘s parents are both dead and her brother sends her off to get married. She runs away on her wedding night to another city and joined a school to learn more about her magic. Until Reid comes and gets her and makes a deal. Vaasa has to help him for 3 years to become the leader and then she‘s free.
This is the first in a series, so it ends in a bit of a cliffhanger.

Loved this! Stayed up past my bedtime with this gem, it was so good! Enjoyed everything about it except that it‘s a trilogy and the next two books aren‘t out yet. This was a library read, but picked up my own copy so I can read it again. Serious slow burn, lots of political plots and intrigue, betrayal, mistrust, and revenge. The romance wasn‘t an afterthought but didn‘t dominate the plot. It was well done and developed as the characters did.
I haven't really been in the Christmas spirit lately and these last 2 weeks at work have been really rough. I needed a little retail therapy to help cheer me up.
Debut novel. This was so addictive I have no words. Could NOT put this down. Incredible political twists for romantasy. The fmc fell a bit flat at times for personality, though the mmc was just *chefs kiss*; asking Vassa what she needs in order to be okay. Grumpy/sunshine where he is sunshine who falls first. Slow burn romance. Reid fighting Vassa over that blanket scene is stuck in my head. Almost Kaan level snark given right back to his woman.
It's a great #bookmail day. I received my #aardvarkbookclub books, The Serpent and the Wolf and Private Rites. And then from Barnes and Noble, two chunky books, Quicksilver and Wind and Truth.
⭐️⭐️⭐️
I was drawn to this book because the political marriage kind of reminded me of “A Song to Drown Rivers”, which I really enjoyed. I felt pretty neutral about this one, though. The ending was exciting and sets up the next book well, but I probably won‘t continue with the series. 🎧
A dark Princess has one goal, freedom. She is a master politician and a dangerous foe. To accomplish her goal, she must outwit them all. The writing and pacing is fantastic. If there had been an ending, it would have been one of my favorite books of the year. It is hard to believe this was a debut. Thanks to the publisher and Edelweiss.
