Blue Zones Secrets for Living Longer: Lessons from the Healthiest Places on Earth
Blue Zones Secrets for Living Longer: Lessons from the Healthiest Places on Earth | Dan Buettner
6 posts | 10 read | 5 to read
The creator of National Geographic's popular Blue Zones--now a documentary on Netflix--brings readers a beautifully illustrated and informative guide to the places on Earth where people live the longest--including lessons learned, top longevity foods, and the behaviors to help you live to 100--plus a surprising new blue zone. National Geographic Explorer and best-selling author Dan Buettner has traveled the globe to uncover the best strategies for longevity, which he found in the blue zones: places around the world where higher percentages of people enjoy remarkably long, full lives. In The Blue Zones Secrets for Living Longer, Buettner returns to Sardinia, Italy; Ikaria, Greece; Okinawa, Japan; Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula; and Loma Linda, California to check in on the super-agers living in the blue zones and interprets the not-so-secret sauce of purpose, faith, community, down-time, natural movement, and plant-based eating that has powered as many as 10 additional years of healthy living in these regions. And Buettner reveals an all-new blue zone--the first man-made blue zone yet explored. Throughout his two decades of research, Buettner has worked with some of National Geographic's top photographers--including David McLain and Gianluca Cola--to document the healthy habits of the world's longest living communities. In this informative collection, their work punctuates Buettner's lively text, offering a beautiful tour of the blue zones.

I eyed this book for a while before checking it out. It is full of good advice, for how to live a long time. ‘Blue Zones‘ are areas where peoplx live to 100 or more; this is due to surroundings, environment, nutrition, routine, movement, social interaction. There are 5 zones: Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Loma Linda, CA; Ikaria, Greece; Okinawa, Japan; and Singapore. Each chapter focuses on a zone and lays out the way the community⬇️

JenniferEgnor lives there. There are a few recipes, and the last chapters are a 101 for how to create your own zone. Singapore has some great things in place for its community. The guidelines are all good (minus a need for religion) and should be a cornerstone for every community. The idea is to reconnect with each other and with what the earth gives us, while giving back. A capitalist system will not work with these values. The last chapter has 9⬇️ 1mo
JenniferEgnor guidelines to live by. 1) Move Naturally ; 2) Purpose ; 3) Downshift ; 4) 80% Rule ; 5) Plant Stant ; 6) Wine@5 ; 7) Belong ; 8) Loved Ones First 1mo
JenniferEgnor explanatory—spend time with your family, this includes your ‘chosen‘ non-biological family>; 9) Right Tribe . 1mo
JenniferEgnor There is a Netflix documentary about this topic called ‘Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones‘. I‘m going to watch it and I want to read more on the blue zones and try the recipes from the other books. This is an inspiring book for reconnecting, well being, aging well, living well. Really living. (edited) 1mo

Worth reading for me. Focused nicely on food and motion choices with a smattering of community. I‘m saving several of the tips Buettner and the Blue Zones team give in Evernote. Will try to implement slowly over time. Several of the 77 recipes look 😋 too, so I may end up buying this book. Need to check out the Blue Zones Kitchen book first. See how they compare.

Lauram I checked out the audiobook after seeing your posts. I look forward to listening this weekend! 4y
DogMomIrene @Lauram I hope you like it. I‘m finding the advice to be things I think I can realistically implement over time. Some is just plain good sense that I had not considered. Like using kitchen tools that require you to move more. A whisk vs a blender. I‘m used to people recommending taking the stairs, but I don‘t have many stairs in my life right now, so moving around the kitchen makes sense. Also I hope the narrator doesn‘t read the 77 recipes🤣 4y

One of the documentaries about better eating & living refers to our stationary lives as an epidemic akin to smoking, so reading this fact just reinforces that point. Gotta keep moving!

T-minus 16 hours until library ebook is due. Trying to read faster before it disappears from my Kindle app. The struggle is real... as well as the snuggles😂 #dogsoflitsy

AlaMich OMG the dog on top of the pillow 😂😂 4y
DogMomIrene @AlaMich Bernie does this *all* the time, including when I‘m sleeping. I have to arrange my pillows to accommodate him. I‘m just glad that I‘m not super tall.🤣 4y
AlaMich They‘re both adorable! And I love the name Bernie, too! 4y

Since reading The Blue Zones of Happiness, I‘ve been trying some of the suggested strategies. This book seems focused on food choices and changes to environment to promote healthier living, which are definitely two areas I would like to see myself improve.
