This was an interesting idea. An advocate for a mute kid whose parents are getting a divorce after their nanny is killed. Was it the mute child? And what is going on with the grandmother?

This is an entertaining creepy-kid (or is she?) thriller. I‘ll be surprised if this is not the first in a Stella Hudson, best-interest attorney series. It was set up like those old-school network legal shows where there is a situation to resolve with guest characters, but there‘s a separate story of the weekly returning characters we grow to love with this last 5 minutes dedicated in full to them.
A specialized lawyer is helping a custody case by being the lawyer and voice for a little girl who won‘t speak and her nanny just died. Turns out, to protect the little girl, our main character might just need to investigate the nanny‘s death to ensure she makes the right choice.
I enjoyed this story. It reminded me of Baby Teeth, probably because at the center of the story is a child.
A rich woman marries a much less rich man & they have a baby girl.
There‘s a MIL post knee surgery and a pregnant nanny.
Impending divorce.
I won‘t elaborate because how the story unfolds should be experienced without foreknowledge. :)
A good thriller!

I‘ve been a fan of Pekkanen‘s for years so I was excited for this latest thriller. Stella‘s a guardian ad litem, when her mentor & the closest thing she has to family asks her to take on 9 year old Rose Barclay. Rose has trauma-induced mutism after her live-in nanny plummeted from her attic bedroom to her death. No arrest has been made but the public Barclay divorce has DC talking. Stella‘s position allows her to find the truth! Twisty & exciting!
