Aztec
Aztec | Gary Jennings
Aztec is the extraordinary story of the last and greatest native civilization of North America. Told in the words of one of the most robust and memorable characters in modern fiction, Mixtli-Dark Cloud, Aztec reveals the very depths of Aztec civilization from the peak and feather-banner splendor of the Aztec Capital of Tenochtitlan to the arrival of Hernn Corts and his conquistadores, and their destruction of the Aztec empire. The story of Mixtli is the story of the Aztecs themselves---a compelling, epic tale of heroic dignity and a colossal civilization's rise and fall.

Absolutely epic novel. Rich, detailed setting. Strong, flawed, lovable characters. The narrator is so brilliant and has such a distinct voice. Plot of the main character follows the rise and fall of the Aztec Empire. TW: rape, gore, mutilation. 5 out of 5 on GR. Highly, highly recommend. Will be reading more from this author.

Crazeedi Oh I remember beginning to read this, read a couple chapters and couldn't handle the blood and gore, so I never finished. And I always hear it was a great book, but noooo... 6y
dawn-pInk @Crazeedi You made the right call. It def gets grosser and more bloody as the story goes on. 6y
Crazeedi @dawn-pInk that's a shame because I really wanted to read about that civilization 6y
dawn-pInk @Crazeedi If I come across any other good fictionalizations, I will remember you! 6y
Crazeedi @dawn-pInk thank you! That'd be awesome! 6y

So incredibly epic. The story of the life of one man growing up in the Aztec Empire, starting in the middle class and through intelligence and luck making his fate. Beautiful prose. Wonderful characters. Surprising twists. Can‘t wait to finish!

The ending made me sad, the colonization of a people that did not see disaster coming.

‪“But at the end of your life, no matter how crowded were its roads and its days, you will have learned what all must learn. And that will be too late for any starting over, too late for anything but regret. So learn it now. No man has ever lived out any life but one, and that one chosen is his own, most of that alone.”

I'm doing research for a book I've started on and stumbled across the book by #garyjennings. Aztec is such a well researched book. He really brings each scene to life with vivid detail. Warning: some of the scenes are gruesome! But then the book is about the Aztecs.
