A timely story of queer love and survival set against the backdrop of a climate change apocalypse, this book is Station Eleven and The Last of Us meets All thats Left in the World. As the end of the world approaches, is there time for one final love story? An apocalyptic storm has wreaked havoc on the world. Haunted by the memories of those she couldnt save, Liz returns to the only place she felt safe before the world fell away: the bookstore where she used to work. She settles into a routine operating the shop as a trading post, welcoming stragglers who want to trade supplies for a book or leave behind messages for loved ones. Then she learns another life-ending storm is coming and shes nowhere near ready. Until she finds an intruder breaking into the bookstore late at night. Enter Maeve, a guarded, spikey, and potentially dangerous out-of-towner. When Maeves secrets come to light and Lizs inner demons come back to haunt them both, the pair find themselves fighting for their lives in more ways than one.

Great title, cool cover (though there‘s no fire in the book), very meh book. It starts fairly well but then seems to be different genres in different sections and the pacing is all over the place.

I'm not panning this as I'm decidedly not the demographic this was written for but I was pretty unimpressed. It starts so well: Liz lives on her own in a bookstore after a Storm wiped out most of the people (& power, supplies, etc) & survives by trading with people who wander by her store- books for whatever they have. One night another girl breaks into her store who brings knowledge & gumption Liz lacks but also trouble. Sounds fantastic right?

bookandbedandtea But the author didn't set the scene well IMO. In flashbacks we see that The Storm was expected for many months before it happened (how it was predicted was never explained) but people, even families, were split on whether they believed it would happen and what it would entail. Even people who believed seemed kinda nonchalant about it. Liz's dad is making plans to go live with his sister in Alaska because she's set up to live off the grid, but 3w
bookandbedandtea Her mom thinks it's nonsense and won't discuss leaving. Meanwhile, Liz and her twin sister are making plans to go off to college and even the dad is OK with that, he only makes sure they have their aunt's address in case they need it. No discussion of how they might get to Alaska in the face of a natural disaster. When we meet Liz (after The Storm) several people have warned her there's another one coming but there's no explanation about how they 3w
bookandbedandtea Can know that. Also, is this only happening in the US? Seems like something like this would affect the whole world but there's no info about that. Also, Liz's arm gets mangled in a generator (her hand is described as being shredded and she can even see the bones) but within a few days she had some limited use of it again. And no infection, despite the very limited water she had access to. 3w
bookandbedandtea TLDR: premise- excellent; execution- eh. 3w

I have another full day #OnMountainTime and it feels good! I'm starting this one right now so I'll be in a future, dystopian New Jersey for #WhereAreYouMonday

⭐️⭐️⭐️
Lily runs the last bookstore on earth.

If the main character wasn‘t so pretentious and patronizing about other people‘s choices, and just plain dumb at times, it would have been a good book.

Through the remains of the front window, I can see Peacoat Man stumble down the road, Sawyer by his side. When he sees my shadow in the window, he smiles. I smile back.

I picked up these pretty books at an indie bookstore yesterday then took them with me to Rifle Falls state park. What a gorgeous day! (And I can't wait to start reading both of these.)

bookandbedandtea @TheBookgeekFrau Truly! I had never been to this park before and I loved it! You know how short we are on water here, so being near so much of it felt amazing on top of it being so visually stunning. 6mo
TheBookgeekFrau @bookandbedandtea We've been wanting to go there since we moved here; and 5 years later we still haven't gone 😂 It must've been really amazing from all the snow we had this winter! 6mo
bookandbedandtea @TheBookgeekFrau Have you been here 5 years already?! 😲 It was impressive- and the melt-off is just beginning! I'd think it would be more amazing in a few weeks. But I wonder what it looks like in August, after months of no precipitation? 🤔 6mo
TheBookgeekFrau @bookandbedandtea 5 years this month--crazy, right?! 6mo

Pickpick

A Brilliant Story that left me gasping, chewing my nails, and giggling like a school girl after a text from their crush! i loved the unique setting, the brilliant characters, and how relatable the two main characters were! it starts off a little slower, almost cozy, and quickly snowballs into the high paced action of trying to survive at the end of the world. a brilliant new take on an old genre!
