Pitch Dark: A Novel | Paul Doiron
6 posts | 5 read
Game Warden Mike Bowditch must chase down a cunning and dangerous fugitive in the North Maine Woods in this nail-biter of a thriller from Edgar Award-winning author Paul Doiron. Legendary bush pilot Josie Jonson cant believe her luck when a skilled builder just happens to show up after she purchases land near Prentiss Pond. All Mark Redmond asks in return for building Josies dream cabin is that he be left alone to homeschool his 12-year-old daughter. For Maine game warden investigator Mike Bowditch, the intensity of Redmond's secretiveness is troublingespecially in light of suspicious criminal activity being reported around the area. When he asks Josie to fly him to the pond, he soon comes to regret his naivete. Hours after they arrive, Bowditch awakens from drugged unconsciousness to find Josie dead and Redmond and his daughter Cady on the run, making a mad dash to Canada. For Mike Bowditch, there is no choice but to set off through the impenetrable forest, alone and unarmed in pursuit of the mysterious fugitive. As he navigates a windblown landscape choked with deadfalls and blocked by swollen streams, he marvels at Redmond's bushcraft. The man possesses skills surpassing his own, and Bowditch can't tell if he is the cat or the mouse in this dangerous game. As they converge on the Canadian border, Bowditch pieces together the details of Redmond's past and is shaken by a thought: his enemy is prepared to kill his own child rather than have her taken from him. Can Mike Bowditch stop the desperate man in time to rescue Cady, or will he be forced to watch another innocent soul die?

I am a big fan of Paul Doiron‘s mysteries featuring Mike Bowditch. Bowditch is a Maine game warden whose deep commitment to justice, and penchant for trouble are combined to yield great stories. Here, he pursues a murderous man and his daughter into Canada. In fine twists, we come to understand that nothing is as it seems. His father-in-law, Charley and pilot Jo Johnson accompany Mike on the first leg of this great chase. Don‘t miss this thriller!

I think I keep expecting Mike Bowditch to be Walt Longmire (or Paul Doiron to be Craig Johnson?) which is not only unfair but distracts me from being able to love-love this series like I once did. That said, this is so much better than the last one (which was Mansplain City, ugh). A fast-paced pursuit of a killer through the deep Maine woods on dark night during a wet spring (ick, and NO THANKS), this had great tension and sense of place! ⭐️3.75⭐️

4.5⭐

Paul Dorian has now written 15 books in the Mike Bowditch Series and they are still amazing. I always enjoy to see what the Maine Game Warden is investigating or getting into. I feel that you could read this as a stand--alone and not be lost.

Mike is called to assist with a missing person case, that may not be a missing person, by a rookie game warden. Mike and Charley, his father-in-law, head to the northern woods of Maine. ⬇️

MonicaLoves2Read Soon, Mike is trying to survive another daring adventure.

Dorian has developed Bowditch's character so much throughout this series. Bowditch is a warden that's not afraid to bend the rules. He is often finding himself in trouble with his superiors. He doesn't care though, as long as he solves the case. The series is a different take on your regular police procedurals. If you have never read the Bowditch Series and like Police Procedurals, I think you would enjoy this series.

Tentative Publishing Date: June 25, 2024

Thanks to Netgalley, Saint Martin's Press, Minotaur Books and Dorian for the E-ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

☺️ Happy Reading ☺️
