Trolls
Trolls: An Unnatural History | John Lindow
7 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
Trolls lurk under bridges waiting to eat children, threaten hobbits in Middle-Earth, and invade the dungeons of Hogwarts. Often they are depicted as stupid, slow, and ugly creatures, but they also appear as comforting characters in some childrens stories or as plastic dolls with bright, fuzzy hair. Today, the name of this fantastic being from Scandinavia has found a wider reach: it is the word for the homeless in California and slang for the antagonizing and sometimes cruel people on the Internet. But how did trolls go from folktales to the World Wide Web? To explain why trolls still hold our interest, John Lindow goes back to their first appearances in Scandinavian folklore, where they were beings in nature living beside a preindustrial society of small-scale farming and fishing. He explores reports of actual encounters with trollsmeetings others found plausible in spite of their better judgmentand follows trolls natural transition from folktales to other domains in popular culture. Trolls, Lindow argues, would not continue to appeal to our imaginations today if they had not made the jump to illustrations in Nordic books and Scandinavian literature and drama. From the Moomins to Brothers Grimm and Three Billy Goats Gruff to cartoons, fantasy novels, and social media, Lindow considers the panoply of trolls that surround us and their sometimes troubling connotations in the contemporary world. Taking readers into Norwegian music and film and even Yahoo Finance chat rooms, Trolls is a fun and fascinating book about these strange creatures.

Why yes...I might be trolling #LitsyAtoZ lists and #abecedarian to take screenshots and follow fellow challengers. What of it? 😳😜🤓

I have no shame.

BookishMarginalia Great idea! Litsy-stalking is so fun! 8y
britt_brooke 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 8y
Lynnsoprano If it weren't for other Littens, my #LitsyAtoZ list would have quite a few holes. 8y

"Feminist Criticism? But that's censorship!"

Oh Internet. Some days I love you and some days I hate you. And some days it's both.

Owlizabeth This is why I spend most of my time on Litsy. I've never been mansplained or threatened with rape on this site!!! 😕 8y
Lizpixie The way trolls act is just disgusting. Anonymity behind a screen makes big people out of the smallest minds. I just saw the Law&OrderSVU episode that dealt with this topic and it made me sick. My youngest daughter was hounded for years on social media for one silly mistake & she seriously contemplated suicide, we had her in counselling for years. She still faces attacks about it and this is 6yrs later. Where will it end? 8y
Laura317 @Lizpixie I'm so sorry your daughter had to go through that. People can be so cruel. ((Hugs)) 8y

Smrloomis @Lizpixie Years?! Goodness, I'm so sorry to hear that. 8y
Yossarian @Lizpixie That's so horrible. We are dealing with "Mean Girls" issues, but nothing so extreme in intent or duration! 8y
Laalaleighh Oh my gosh @Lizpixie that's horrible! She's lucky to have a parent that realized how devastating that could be and sought out counseling for her though! So many people don't understand how real this problem is. Hugs to y'all. She'll be in my thoughts. 8y
Laalaleighh Oh and just a side note. Free speech is a right that only pertains to restraining the government from legally restricting what can/cannot be said. We don't have some inherent right to say whatever we want without consequences or criticism. It's not something that extends into the social realm. Therefore those asshats (pardon my language) can't save anything. This is a pet peeve of mine because I keep seeing misogynistic trolls cry "free speech". 8y
Laalaleighh Misogynistic trolls- also the only people who can make me refer to as-hominem attacks because they don't have a single idea worth intellectual debate. Jerkfaces. 8y
moranadatter That comic really hits home. Lots of people get censorship wrong. @Lizpixie That's awful! I'm glad you were able to get her some help. The stuff that happens to us as children can be so hard to move past. Family support and love really helps. 8y
Zelma @Lizpixie that is so awful! I am so sorry to hear this. Ugh! 8y
Zelma @Laalaleighh great point. people forget that we are protected by government to say whatever the hell we want (unless it will actively harm someone, like Fire in a crowded theater), but we are not immune to the consequences of saying it. Free speech have comes with responsibility. 8y
Lizpixie @Laura317 @Smrloomis @Yossarian @Laalaleighh @kmdartist @Zelma thank you for your kindness, it took her a long time to recover, she still takes anxiety meds occasionally but the worst is over. She still gets some disgusting comments online and even texts though we've changed her number a few times. You gotta wonder why people are like that, are they born that way or made? 8y
BookishFeminist @Lizpixie Omg that's awful. I'm so sorry your daughter had to go through that. Sending my solidarity- bullying isn't fun and Internet trolls are the worst. 😔 8y
DeannaTess Sending love and strength to your daughter. 8y
Smrloomis @Lizpixie glad the worst is over. I really have no idea what drives people to do that to others. It's crazy 😟 8y
Ekkross @Lizpixie and @Yossarian I wish your kids strength and healing. And I agree with @Owlizabeth . People here on Litsy make me like humans a lot more 8y
