This is the first book I‘ve read of Marcie Rendon. I liked Quill and Crow and most of the others in this novel. The setting is northern MN in deep winter. It‘s freezing cold. The oil pipeline has come to the area and Indigenous women are disappearing. Quill is very independent and wants to find and save those who are missing. As with many Native Tribes, there is a casino on the reservation. This was a quick read. 4.5/5⭐️

Just a few chapters in, I texted a friend in my book club and lamented, bluntly, “I don‘t like our book.” The fact that I came around is a surprise to me!

I never did come around to Rendon‘s writing style, however. Her short, declarative sentences are not my cup of coffee (nor are they my peanut butter cookies). More variation of sentence structure would‘ve gone a long way. 👇🏻

This is a pick for the importance of the subject matter - the crisis of crimes against indigenous women. #MMIW

There were aspects of the writing I found distracting, but that is a quibble that pales against the importance of raising awareness.

An interesting plot involving missing and murdered indigenous women, but the writing was sometimes awkward and some parts of the mystery were not definitively solved (which is realistic but not satisfying).

I‘m not sure about this one…I love that awareness is being brought to the forefront about the missing Native American women, I‘m just not so sure this was the book for me to receive the message the author was trying to convey.

Beautiful yet devastating story of solidarity within a reservation in northern Minnesota. Quill is a courageous wife, mother, friend, and woman. As she‘s out one day on her daily run, she hears a bone chilling scream from a nearby woman. This is a heavy story that focuses on missing and murdered indigenous women. Quill is tired of her community constantly being under attack of heinous crimes, and will stop at nothing to get to the truth.

Quill has always lived in the rez in northern Minnesota and is all too aware of the epidemic of Native women going missing when she hears a woman scream when she‘s out on a run. From there the book focuses in on her realities, the issues with the local tribal police, and the feeling amongst the women that they have to protect themselves and each other, as no one else will. A searing read.

“How the hell did we survive this long? she asked herself. How did our ancestors survive the broken hearts of children gone? Parents murdered? We have lived with losing loved ones for century after century. And we still have babies and keep loving. This love will break my heart.” This book is suspenseful, heartbreaking, and powerful. A story about #MMIW and the bystander effect. “It is a present-day, on-the-edge-of-trauma reality.”

Marcie Rendon is a go to author for me.
A very good novel focusing on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and women who are fierce, strong, and brave.

Marcie Rendon is one of my favorite authors. This is a standalone novel. Quill is fierce and determined and independent and her husband Crow has to come to terms with her nature. There is trauma, mystery, violence to indigenous women, love, loyalty. This is an excellent read. Be sure to read the Author‘s Note. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

While training for a marathon, Quill hears a woman scream in the woods. When she investigates, she finds one beaded earring. Thus begins her search for young native women who have disappeared recently. Quill is fierce and self-reliant and fears the police or feds will be ineffective as usual. Rendon keeps the reader engaged with her rich characters and gripping action.

Quill, training for the Boston Marathon, is out running when she hears a woman scream. This is the catalyst to lead her on an investigation into the violence and kidnapping of women and girls in her community, touching on the epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous women in North America. Quill and her friends Punk and Gaylyn are well realized, empathetic characters - fully fleshed women with all their vulnerabilities, love, and rage.

Great newly released thriller that focuses on the dangers Indigenous women face. Rendon gives a voice to social injustices while also creating a compelling suspense mixed with heartfelt characters that feel authentic.

It's a bit dark, with a quiet sadness that will stick with you while reading.

My first experience with Rendon‘s writing, I found this one to be a sad, but realistic feeling thriller set mainly on a Minnesota reservation. A runner training for the Boston marathon, the book opens with Quill hearing a woman scream in the woods. Chilled & frustrated with the lack of progress by the tribal police, Quill can‘t stop herself from investigating on her own. Murder, abduction, domestic violence & drugs all get covered here. Gripping!
