Nocturne
Nocturne: On the Life and Death of My Brother | Helen Humphreys
13 posts | 4 read | 15 to read
Helen Humphreys younger brother was gone before she could come to terms with the fact that he was terminally ill. Diagnosed with stage 4B pancreatic cancer at the age of forty-five, he died four months later, leaving behind a grieving family. Martin was an extraordinary pianist who debuted at the Royal Festival Hall in London at the age of twenty, later becoming a piano teacher and senior examiner at the Royal Conservatory of Music. The two siblings, though often living far apart, were bonded on many levels. Now Humphreys has written a deeply felt, haunting memoir both about and for her brother. Speaking directly to him, she lays bare their secrets, their disagreements, their early childhood together, their intense though unspoken love for one another. A beautifully articulated testament to the power of human connection, this poetic, candid and intimate book is an offering not only to the memory of Martin but to all those who are living through the loss of family and friends.

I picked this up from a used book sale last weekend, because I remembered seeing @Bibliogeekery post about it. I was not disappointed. Nocturne was a raw, haunting memoir about loss and grieving.

I re-read this gorgeous memoir that Helen Humphreys wrote for her brother after he passed away. It's such a stunning and sad and beautiful read.

This book was so sweet and sad and perfectly the right thing for me right now. Humphreys is so raw and honest about her grief following her brother's diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and his death. Nocturne is devastating and beautiful. It's short and heartfelt and not a light read.

"and sometimes this body remembers how to talk to that body, through the static of the years." ?? I know I'm the ultimate superfan but this whole passage is gorgeous! #queerbooks

Love this description of Helen's (look, I'm pretending we're friends now - I WISH) memories of Toronto before I lived there! #queerbooks

Although I've read every other word Humphreys has written, I've been saving this one because I was never sure I felt up to a memoir about her brother's death. Now that I am dealing with the imminent death of a family member I decided to start it (could go either way in the good idea - bad idea categories). So far it's gorgeous and sad and relatable and seems like the right thing for now. Helen Humphreys 💗

[DELETED] 2232195534 So sorry about your family member. Sending thoughts and prayers. 8y
