Christmas By Candlelight
Christmas By Candlelight: A cosy, escapist festive treat by the bestselling Queen of Christmas | Karen Swan
1 post | 1 read | 1 to read
Snowed in for the holidays, old truths rise to the surface. Christmas by Candlelight is a cosy Christmas story from Karen Swan, bestselling author of The Stolen Hours. Its three days before Christmas and starting to snow when high-flier Libby and her new boyfriend reluctantly attend her university reunion on the way back from a wedding in Yorkshire. Hosted by Archie Templeton - the heartbreaker of their group - at his grand family estate, the night is a great success until they go to leave: the road is now impassable and theyre given a bed for the night. At first, being snowed in together is fun as the old friends wait in high spirits for the farmer to clear a path. But as hours pass with no news, everyone grows restless. Then the power goes out . . . Hunkered down together by candlelight, they reminisce about old times - and tensions soon start to rise. Secrets from the past begin to unravel and Libby is confronted with a truth she has long tried to deny.

This isn‘t what you‘d expect from the title, it isn‘t a cosy Christmas love story. Romance does figure in a subliminal way but it is quite a hard hitting story set at Christmas about a group of former college friends snowed in for Christmas. I wouldn‘t say the characters are the most lovable characters you could wish to meet but the story does work and both the story and characters grow on you the more you read.

Andrew65 As the story progresses there are quite a few sad and hard hitting moments, with incidents relayed that affect people‘s lives significantly. I felt overall this was a good story and whilst not what was expected the story did really hold up well. Amongst all the relationship information, told in the twin timelines of the current time and their time at college, there is an element of mystery that comes to an head towards the end of the book. 11mo
Andrew65 Overall this is a story I‘d recommend, and an author I‘d recommend, but do not go into it think this is the normal cutesy Christmas Fayre.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

(Trigger Warning : This story does involve a sexual assault, or at least the ramifications of it)

AnnR Sounds good! If I just based my decision on the title and cover, I might pass up this book as it sounds too romancey for my reading tastes. 11mo
Andrew65 @AnnR There‘s definitely a relationship / romance element to it, but it has far more depth than that. It feels more about friends and their relationship than that. 11mo
