Private Lives of the Tudors
Private Lives of the Tudors | Tracy Borman
12 posts | 5 read | 29 to read
'I do not live in a corner. A thousand eyes see all I do.' Elizabeth I The Tudor monarchs were constantly surrounded by an army of attendants, courtiers and ministers. Even in their most private moments, they were accompanied by a servant specifically appointed for the task. A groom of the stool would stand patiently by as Henry VIII performed his daily purges, and when Elizabeth I retired for the evening, one of her female servants would sleep at the end of her bed. These attendants knew the truth behind the glamorous exterior. They saw the tears shed by Henry VII upon the death of his son Arthur. They knew the tragic secret behind 'Bloody' Mary's phantom pregnancies. And they saw the 'crooked carcass' beneath Elizabeth I's carefully applied makeup, gowns and accessories. It is the accounts of these eyewitnesses, as well as a rich array of other contemporary sources that historian Tracy Borman has examined more closely than ever before. With new insights and discoveries, and in the same way that she brilliantly illuminated the real Thomas Cromwell - "The Private Life of the Tudors "will reveal previously unexamined details about the characters we think we know so well.

I enjoyed reading this book. I learned many historical facts that I would not have known otherwise and, although sounding cliche, it read much like a novel. She focused more heavily on Henry VIII; it seemed that she was crowding Elizabeth I into the end. Now, I definitely must read separate books about both of them, more books about these dynasties and visit the castles in England. I am intrigued by Elizabeth; really a “virgin”? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

BarbaraBB Did you read 7y
BarbaraBB You probably did but I really like Mantel‘s writing about the Tudors! 7y

"Kings and Emperors, all be but men, all be but mortal...All the rich apparel that can be devised, can not take from them the condition of mortality."

Well, Henry VIII just died...Loving this book, My People!

I think I will read this book this weekend. Its my own form of reality TV which I enjoy so much better these days.

RebL I'm obligated as a cradle Episcopalian to be Tudor obsessed. Doesn't even matter that I lapsed. I never thought about likening it to reality television, but, yeah. 7y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads It is so fascinating so far. I have been making my "Wow" comments. Thats always a good sign. @RebL 7y

All in all, a good book about the Tudors. My favorite to read about was Queen Elizabeth - the Virgin Queen.

I am endlessly fascinated with the Tudors so most of the material in this book was not new to me, but there are some great nitty-gritty details about life in the palace.
