The Cemetery Boys
The Cemetery Boys | Heather Brewer
11 posts | 10 read | 10 to read
Part Hitchcock, part Hinton, this first-ever stand-alone novel from Heather Brewer, New York Times bestselling author of the acclaimed Chronicles of Vladimir Tod series, uses classic horror elements to tell a darkly funny coming-of-age story about the dangerous power of belief and the cost of blind loyalty that Kirkus Reviews called a slick, spooky, chilling mystery. When Stephen's dad says they're moving, Stephen knows it's pointless to argue. They're broke from paying Mom's hospital bills, and now the only option left is to live with Stephen's grandmother in Spencer, a backward small town that's like something out of The Twilight Zone. Population: 814. Stephen's summer starts looking up when he meets punk girl Cara and her charismatic twin brother, Devon. With Cara, he feels safe and understoodand yeah, okay, she's totally hot. In Devon and his group, he sees a chance at making real friends. Only, as the summer presses on, and harmless nights hanging out in the cemetery take a darker turn, Stephen starts to suspect that Devon is less a friend than a leader. And he might be leading them to a very sinister end. . . .

I read on here not to read the prologue, and I‘m glad I didn‘t. I did enjoy Stephen‘s narrative, though whiney at times (oh to be a teenager again). I was intrigued while reading but wasn‘t quite satisfied with the ending. Overall it was an easy, quick read.

Bluh. I am quite ill so just kind of reading and napping a lot right now. Mostly napping. But I finished this book pretty quickly.

It had potential, with a very The Lost Boys vibe and a lot of intrigue which kept me reading but honestly, I didn‘t understand what the motivation was for any of the characters...main or secondary. The ending was a let down as well.

Okay, back to my blanket-cave. Bluh.

I discovered this book while looking up music by a local band with the same name (check them out!). When I saw that the author is actually a trans guy I checked it out from the library but so far there‘s no LGBTQ content.

The main character is a little insufferable so far but I‘m going to stick with it because I haven‘t read much horror lately.

Stephen and his dad move from Denver, Colorado to the town his dad grew up in and left as soon as he could. It‘s not long before Stephen starts to hear stories of the Winged Ones. Huge raven like monsters.

I liked this book but I felt like a lot was left unsaid. I don‘t mind when stories leave out some aspects of the story but this one there were more than I‘m use to. When the finals reveal happened I was surprised.

I think this book would have been a pick for me without the prologue. Moving through the story without knowing where it was going, especially with a story that relies so heavily on mystery and anticipation, would have made it much more enjoyable for me. Wasn't a huge fan of the main character, but overall the book was engaging and worth the time. Great Halloween read 🎃
