Person-Centred Counselling for Trans and Gender Diverse People
Person-Centred Counselling for Trans and Gender Diverse People: A Practical Guide | Sam Hope
5 posts | 1 read
Trans clients are frequently doubted, misunderstood, infantilised and judged by professionals, and this book presents an approach that ensures psychological wellbeing and trust is built between counsellor and client. This person-centred, affirmative approach is based around unlearning assumptions about gender and destabilising professionals' ideas of 'knowing better' than, and judging the client, so that they can forge a relationship and connection that is on an equal footing. The book explores a range of topics such as the overlap of gender diversity and autism, sex and sexuality, intersectionality, unconscious bias and reflective practice. Essential reading for professionals that want to support trans people's mental health and social wellbeing.

"Our ideas of gender and sex being opposites does not fit the overlapping complexity of gender or sex. Is a beach part of the land or the sea? It has aspects of both, and tides that flow between two states. Some #genderfluid people experience something very similar and can only say with certainty where they are right now, knowing that tomorrow they may feel very differently."

The glossary contains the terms homosocial/heterosocial/bisocial, being descriptors of gendered orientations of friendship, and I guess the film "When Harry Met Sally" is an exploration of whether heterosocial relationships can exist independently of romantic and sexual relationships (the film suggests they can't: I don't agree, although I do like the film). It's an otherwise novel concept for me, and got me wondering if asocial or demisocial ⬇️

Bookwomble ... orientations have been recognised, and as the picture is of the demisocial flag, I'm pleased to say they have! None of these terms seem to quite fit for me, though, and I'm wondering if I'm “grey social“ or something else?

I bought this last year with good intentions of reading it soon, but... ?? However, I'm attending the Person-Centred Association GSRD (gender, sexual and relationship diversity) 2023 conference next Saturday and Sam Hope is giving the keynote speech, "Therapist encounters with autistic trans people," which I'm really looking forward to, so NOW is the time to read their book! ?️‍??️‍⚧️?♾️

Bookwomble It looks to be a packed day with lots scheduled, and a 250 mile roundtrip, so I think I'm going to be fairly tired next Sunday, but in a good way 😌

Bookwomble @Chrissyreadit OK, I have no connections in your area to be able to signpost to (being on a global platform, I guess the odds were slim now I think of it!) If you're interested in virtual therapy training, I've attended several with Online Events, which is UK-based but usually has attendees from all over. I hope I'm on the right wavelength here! Anyhoo, this is a link for them 🙂 https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/o/onlineventscouk-428528850?aff=eand 13mo
Chrissyreadit there are a lot of options there! i‘m going to also look for similarly titled trainings here too thank you! 13mo
Bookwomble @Chrissyreadit You're welcome 😊 13mo
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja Will do 😊 13mo
The_Book_Ninja How was the conference, Wombie? 13mo
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja Ah, yes! Thank you for asking ☺️ It was brilliant! I met loads of interesting, diverse people, and despite working in a team, we're spread across a borough, so I rarely have face-time with other counsellors, so it was fantastic to meet people of a similar mindset. Loads of learning and much to reflect upon. Makes me hungry for more! 😄 13mo
The_Book_Ninja @Bookwomble Excellent! I‘m glad the trip was productive💪🏼😃👍🏼 You never stop learning🎓 13mo
