An Evil Heart: A Novel | Linda Castillo

I have enjoyed the Amish series by Linda Castillo. I find them to be good for a more lighthearted read. This one, went deeper into the evils in an Amish community. Most of the characters are respectful people. This novel has some darker and more evil elements. It‘s a medium paced book with a couple of murders. I thought I had figured out who the murder was—no there were twists I hadn‘t figured out. 4:5 star

I could read Castillo‘s Amish mysteries every day. This one involves the murder of a young Amish man that everyone likes, but they don‘t know about the evil that lurks in some men‘s souls…So good! setting, mood, characters! Kate knows a lie when she hears one

#12Booksof2023 #August

August was not a great month for me, so I read fewer books. My top read happens to be the 15th book in Castillo‘s Kate Burkholder series. Kate, formerly Amish, is police chief in Painters Mill, Ohio and in this one investigates the brutal death of a young Amish man. I recommend starting the series from the beginning.

First book completed for #Scarathlon is the 15th installment of the Kate Burkholder series. Set in Ohio's Amish country, Kate grew up Amish, but left the community and became a police officer. In the first book, she returns to her hometown as the chief of police. I really, really like this series. Kate is such a human, likable character, and watching her progress as a person has been delightful. Through the books we've learned more of her ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) backstory, and have also seen her begin to mend fences with her brother and sister (who are still Amish). Castillo writes the Amish community so well, presenting them neither idealistically nor cynically, but simply as people trying their best to live life the way they believe it should be lived.

This book, like the others, is pacy and engaging. It does start with a rather gruesome murder, and there are themes of sexual assault, so ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) keep that in mind. While I highly recommend starting this series at the beginning and reading it straight through, this one can be read on its own as well. I'm hoping Castillo still has a lot of plans for Kate's story, because I really look forward to reading a new one every year!!

Gissy That is the #15 in that series. I still will like to read maybe a couple of books first to see who is this character. Sounds good🤗 14mo
Bookwormjillk I think I put a book from this series on my list when you posted about it before. Thanks for the reminder. 14mo
TheAromaofBooks @Gissy @Bookwormjillk - I definitely recommend starting at the beginning of this series because Kate really does grow as a person!! That said, the earliest books are my least favorite - maybe because I feel like I've gotten to know Kate better as the series goes on? Or are they really not as good? 😂 14mo
Andrew65 Love this series. Well done 👏👏👏 14mo

intothehallofbooks I love this series! I‘m on the 10th book, so I have a little ways to go to catch up to you, but I love Kate and the other regular characters. 14mo
Gissy @TheAromaofBooks If you have continue with the series is that Kate is like Kate “fictional friend” where the relationship has grown 😄 14mo

In the latest Kate Burkholder book, an Amish man is brutally murdered. As she starts to investigate, Kate must deal with the Amish wall of silence before she starts learning some disturbing things about the victim. I really like the Amish community setting of this series, and the stories are good. I definitely recommend these books if you like mysteries.

It‘s hard to believe that this marks the 15th installment of the Kate Burkholder series! Some big personal steps finally take place here and the mystery certainly is a riveting one, too. Painters Mill has that Cabot Cove feel to it with its dwindling population, familiar faces and charm. While I did guess who the killer partway through, I could hardly put this down— plus it‘s nice to be right! Looking forward to the next one in this great series!

Chief of Police Kate Burkholder responds to a call only to discover an Amish man who has been violently killed with a crossbow. Aden Karn was just twenty years old, well liked, and from an upstanding Amish family. Aden Karn was looking forward to marrying his sweet fiancé, Emily. All the while, Kate‘s own wedding day to Tomasetti draws near.

EadieB But as she delves into Karn‘s past, Kate begins to hear whispers about a dark side. What if Aden Karn wasn‘t the wholesome young man everyone admired? Kate comes face to face with the terrible consequences of a life lived in all the dark places. This is the 15th book in the Kate Burkholder series. I have read all the others and suggest you do too as that's the best way to get a feel for the series. 1y
EadieB Although it can be read as a standalone as enough background is given in each book. There are great plot twists which make you switch to other characters while reading the book. The ending is a complete surprise which I didn't see coming. I'm now looking forward to the next book in the series. If you like twists with your mysteries then you will love this book. 1y
Andrew65 I really must get back to this series! 1y
