To the Ends of the Earth
To the Ends of the Earth: A Sea Trilogy | William Golding
3 posts | 2 read | 7 to read
To the Ends of the Earth, William Golding's great sea trilogy, presents the extraordinary story of a warship's troubled journey to Australia in the early 1800s. Told through the pages of Edmund Talbolt's journall - with equal measure of wit and disdain - it records the mounting tensions and growing misfortunes aboard the ancient ship. An instant maritime classic, and one of Golding's finest achievements, the trilogy was adapted into a major three-part Mastpiece Theatre drama in 2006.

#APlanetInTheTitle

This sea trilogy (by the author of Lord of the Flies) is told through the journals of a young aristocrat on a six-month voyage to Australia in the early 19th century. The first novel in the series, Rites of Passage, won the 1980 Booker Prize.

The 2005 BBC miniseries starring Benedict Cumberbatch looks pretty good, too!

I've had an all-Benedict kind of day today with my migraine. I'm currently hooked on this series, To The Ends of The Earth. Has anyone read the books? I wonder how they compare to this adaptation.

Emily92Bibliophile I liked this series! I haven't read the books yet but I want to! 8y
LeahBergen I bought them a little while ago (a 3-in-1 volume). They look really good! 8y

julesG Funny, I had a Sherlock-DrStrange evening. ;) I don't think I read the book, liked the series, though. 8y
Eyelit I have the books but haven't read them yet. I hope you're feeling better! 8y
RadicalReader @LauraBrook how people look when they're told for the up teeth time the world is ending 8y
Nicohlay Aw look how cute he is! 😍😍 8y
LauraBrook @Emily92Bibliophile @LeahBergen I'll look out for them at a thrift store, I think they could be good! @Theresa I know! I felt kind of bad seeing his butt so often. 😊 @julesG Hah, that is funny! It was a Sherlock-Imitation Game-EndofEarth day for me! I'm surprised by how much I liked this. @Eyelit I am, thanks. Was the first time I'd seen flashing lights w a migraine, so a new experience. But glad to be up and about today! 8y
LauraBrook @RadicalReader I know, right? The character he was listening to (drunkenly) blather on and freak out was one of my least favorites. Wouldn't have minded if he went overboard. @Nicohlay I know! I wonder how old he really was while filming, had to have been early 20s. 8y
julesG @LauraBrook More like late 20s. 8y
LauraBrook @julesG You're totally right! That came out in 2005, and he's 40 now. Wow! Shocked at what a baby face he has! 8y
julesG @LauraBrook Tons of make-up, perfect lighting,... A lot of actors play characters that are younger than their actual age - just think of all those YA actors. 8y
rabbitprincess I've read the books and really enjoyed them. Still have to watch the miniseries. Sounds like I'm missing out 😁😂😍😈 8y
LauraBrook @rabbitprincess Hi, rp! I thought you'd read these but wasn't sure. I'm glad to hear that you liked them! I think you'll like this adaptation, with three 90 minute episodes, I'm assuming they were at least mostly faithful to the books. Thanks! 😊 8y

Today's #augustofpages prompt, "books and innocence", made me think of this trilogy by William Golding, told through the eyes of Edmund Talbot on his first sea voyage. His highly observant and yet highly self-un-aware entries, especially in the first volume (Rites of Passage) seem somewhat innocent to me, or at least innocent in the ways of the world.

LeahBergen Why have I never read this?! I need it right now #DamnitLitsy 8y
