Mrs. Porter Calling
Mrs. Porter Calling: A Novel | AJ Pearce
12 posts | 11 read | 5 to read
From the author of the bestselling jaunty, heartbreaking winner (People) Dear Mrs. Bird comes a charming and irresistible novel featuring plucky aspiring journalist Emmy Lake as she navigates life, love, and friendship in London during World War II. London, April 1943. A little over a year since she married Captain Charles Mayhew and he went away to war, Emmy Lake is now in charge of Yours Cheerfully, the hugely popular advice column in Womans Friend magazine. Cheered on by her best friend Bunty, Emmy is dedicated to helping readers face the increasing challenges brought about by over three years of war. The postbags are full and Womans Friend is thriving. But Emmys world is turned upside down when glamorous socialite, the Honorable Mrs. Cressida Porter, becomes the new publisher of the magazine, and wants to change everything the readers love. Aided by Mrs. Pye, a Paris-obsessed fashion editor with delusions of grandeur, and Small Winston, the grumpiest dog in London, Mrs. Porter fills the pages with expensive clothes and frivolous articles about her friends. Worst of all, she announces that she is cutting the Yours Cheerfully column and her vision for the publications future seems dire. With the stakes higher than ever, Emmy and her friends must find a way to save the magazine that they love. Heartwarming, funny, and joyfully uplifting, the third novel in the Emmy Lake Chronicles is a moving tribute to friendship and overcoming adversity.

The story continues with its same witty, lively characters which really drive the stories which are an encouraging look at life during WWII. This is all upended when Mrs. Porter inherits Woman's Friend from her uncle Lord Overton who owned the magazine for 48 years. Everyone is appalled when the new owner, Mrs. Porter, wants nothing more than to make dramatic changes creating havoc amongst the employees and the readers.

Last book of 2023 was the latest continuation of the Emmy Lake Chronicles.

I‘m growing fonder and more attached to Emmy with each entry into this series, as well as attached to her friends and colleagues. I hope AJ Pearce plans to continue, especially as I believe she‘s particularly skilled at balancing the tragedies of wartime London with heartwarming scenes of community and perseverance.

I AM AN EMOTIONAL WRECK. God I love Emmy and Bunty and the crew at Woman's Friend. I would read books about them for the rest of my life. #historicalfiction

This third novel in the Emmy Lake Chronicles (After Dear Mrs. Bird and Yours Cheerfully) might be the best yet. Delightful and heartwarming. Filled with lovely characters helping each other through the hardships of life in wartime London. A feel-good read through and through. Looking forward to the next one!

I loved Dear Mrs Bird. The second one was good but missing something that the first book in the series had. Well this book has that missing something. It was so good. Full of heart and made me feel like I could truly understand what it was like to live in London during WWII.

Dragon I didn‘t know this book existed- yay stacking 💚🐉 1y

A PICK 👍 This is the third book of the ‘Emmy Lake Chronicles‘ and it‘s another delight from AJ Pearce 💟 While it is the 3rd in the series, it‘s been 2 years since I read the 2nd one and I honestly fell right back into step with all the characters, it felt as if no time had passed. I think you could read it as a stand-alone, but the characters are all just so lovely that you‘d be missing out
Themes: London during WWII, Friendship, Magazine Work

This is the third installment of the Emmy Lake series and continues with the lives of Emmy and all her friends still during WWII in London. This time, Mrs Porter has inherited the magazine and decides to change things, and this doesn't go down well. It's a lovely read, and I love reading about the sense of community everyone has during the war, and I did have some tears, too.

Aims42 I love this series so much 🥰 I can never wait for the US pub date, so my UK version is on its way 😇 1y
