After the Forest is a dark and enchanting fantasy debut that explores the repercussions of a childhood filled with magic and a young woman contending with the truth of happily ever after. Ginger. Honey. Cinnamon. Flour. Twenty years after the witch in the gingerbread house, Greta and Hans are struggling to get by. Their mother and stepmother are long dead, Hans is deeply in debt from gambling, and the countryside lies in ruin, its people starving in the aftermath of a brutal war. Greta has a secret, though: the witch's grimoire, secreted away and whispering in Greta's ear for the past two decades, and the recipe inside that makes the best gingerbread you've ever tasted. As long as she can bake, Greta can keep her small family afloat. But in a village full of superstition, Greta and her mysteriously addictive gingerbread, not to mention the rumors about her childhood misadventures, is a source of gossip and suspicion. And now, dark magic is returning to the woods and Greta's magicmagic she is still trying to understandmay be the only thing that can save her. If it doesn't kill her first.

I got this book for free, in exchange for my honest opinion via Tor.
After the Forest is a novel that had the potential to be truly captivating. While it had its moments, I ultimately found myself somewhat disappointed by the overall execution…

I thought this was just a redo of Hansel and Gretel but the author very intricately wove in several other fairy tales so that I was just completely drawn in. I really enjoyed this and look forward to following Kell Woods anywhere…breadcrumbs and all. 🤭

Bk1 of the accumulated #BookMail from October is this gorgeous edition of a Hansel & Gretel retelling. Ever wondered what happened after they escaped from the witch? Now grown & living in the same village, Forced into poverty, they‘re living off the addictive gingerbread Gretel makes using the witches stolen grimoire. But with mutilated bodies turning up in the forest, the talk amongst the villagers of witchcraft is now their biggest worry.

Hansel and Gretel twenty years after escaping the witch and gingerbread house. Lots to like about this book but it felt a bit slow in places, a bit of a slow epic journey. A soft pick.

Pretty good fairy tale that introduces us to the lives of Hansel and Gretel as adults shaped by their childhood traumas. Hansel has become a wastrel, gambling and drinking to excess. Gretel, who is grappling with the knowledge that she has witchy powers, is being pulled toward the dark, and the light. Shapeshifters and a cursed bear loom large. The chapter heads tell the story of Rose Red, and her character has an connection to the siblings too.

My October Illumicrate book arrived and look how stunning it is! 😱 It seems to be a story about Hansel and Gretel that takes place years after the original fairytale! I'm excited for it! It's honestly so beautiful I didn't want to let it out of my sight, so I took it to work with me today! 😂💕📚

Tommy and I finished this audiobook whilst sewing today. This should have been an instant pick for me. One of my favorite tropes is what happens AFTER the fairytale. This is the story of Greta and her brother Hans years after escaping the witch's gingerbread house. And it was... fine. There was nothing inherently wrong with the book, but it took a long time for it to feel like anything was happening.

CONT...

GondorGirl CONT The last quarter was really good, but it didn't quite make up for the slow start. I'm giving it a soft pick. If you enjoy fairy tales it might be worth picking up. 14mo

I really loved this #FairytaleRetelling! Greta & her brother, Hans, are adults- though the town still whispers about Greta (what kind of child pushes an old woman into a fire alive? A witchy child!). And Hans‘ gambling ways are bringing about more trouble still. Plus, a new baroness may be more than she seems… a fresh take on a familiar tale that is perfect for this time of year! And a great audio performance— plus a real scene-stealer of a book!

quirkyreader The artwork is beautiful. Where did it come from? 1y

Kimzey I love that the audiobook gets to stroll into this beautiful scene. 😊 Great review! Stacking! 1y

Today's #bookmail had the FairyLoot and Owlcrate September Adult Fantasy boxes. Very different books. Sun of Blood and Ruin is gorgeous, though it's not getting the best reviews. And After the Forest will be a perfect October read. Though this is the 2nd month the Owlcrate book has had a solid color sprayed edge. Hoping for some more creativity next month.
