In the wake of his parents' tragic deaths in a house fire, fourteen-year-old Richard Elauved has been sent to live with his aunt and uncle in the remote, insular town of Ballantyne. Richard quickly earns a reputation as an outcast, and when a classmate named Tom goes missing, everyone suspects the new, angry boy is responsible for his disappearance. No one believes him when he says the telephone booth out by the edge of the woods sucked Tom into the receiver like something out of a horror movie. No one, that is, except Karen, a beguiling fellow outsider who encourages Richard to pursue clues the police refuse to investigate. He traces the number that Tom prank called from the phone booth to an abandoned house in the Black Mirror Wood. There he catches a glimpse of a terrifying face in the window. And then the voices begin to whisper in his ear . . . You know who I am. She's going to burn. The one you love is going to burn. There's not a thing you can do about it. When another classmate disappears, Richard must find a way to prove his innocence-and preserve his sanity-as he grapples with the dark magic that is possessing Ballantyne and pursuing his destruction. Then again, Richard may not be the most reliable narrator of his own story.

Another favorite from last year that has #Blood on the cover. This old-school haunted house story kept me on edge the whole time.

A one sitting whiplash inducer. There were all the twists and turns and I was there for some of them, but not all.

This was so different than I was expecting! It‘s like a fever dream (nightmare?) wrapped in another, wrapped in…I‘m not even sure 🤣! But I really enjoyed it! I love novels that have a psychological angle to them and the sometimes shocking horror/supernatural moments kept me listening. The narrator was pretty good as well. If you like unique/ somewhat strange horror I definitely recommend. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I almost gave up on this book during the first few chapters because the story seemed so preposterous.
Glad I stuck with it though as this book gave me some serious whiplash with its various plot twists.
All is not what it seems!

My final book for 2023. Only completed 60% of my Goodreads 2023 Reading Challenge. ‘Twas a crazy year!

Happy New Year everyone!

A good read that took a few twists and turns that I didn‘t expect. Not really a horror book, more of a thriller with some supernatural components. Different than I‘ve read before so I enjoyed it.

This may be the King of unreliable narrator stories. It starts out as a typical creepy horror novel about a kid who sees his friend get eaten by a telephone, and of course, no one believes him, but then it gets even weirder ☎️

A weird story and a pretty good twist. Things are not always as they seem!

As I read this book my review was going to be about how this reminded me of the great coming of age horror novels I've read and loved in the past. Then there was the twist which made it more intense and elevated the genre and THEN there was another twist that made this a horror book that will be sure to stick with me. A great novel that I plan to recommend to others.
Thanks to Netgalley and Knopf for this ARC in return for my honest review. 4⭐️

This is a quick read, disturbing and unpleasant. It‘s an odd combination of “can‘t-put-it-down” and “is-it-over-yet”. There‘s an unreliable narrator, twists, and stories within stories. It should have been darkly delightful. Instead, for me, it was just unsettling. It‘s going to give me nightmares but not because it was a great story. I didn‘t enjoy it, but it got under my skin.

Jo Nesbo‘s twisty, spine-tingling tale has 1980s horror film vibes. This novel focuses on 14-year-old outcast Richard Elauved. After his parents die in a fire, Richard is sent to live in a small country town. Soon after, his classmates start curiously disappearing. In the nearby woods he discovers an evil presence in an abandoned phone booth. Now his mission is to stop the harmful force that appears to prey on everyone‘s deepest fears. 3.5 Stars

I loved this book! It reminded me of the horror books I loved reading in the 90s. The story follows a young boy who is new to town. Strange things seem to happen whenever he's around. There's a creepy abandoned house, terrifying nightmares, and lots of things that go bump in the night.

And what a twist it had at the end! 😱 If you're a horror fan, add this one to your list.

This is pretty creepy. You never know what you're going to get with this author, now that he seems to have branched off from his series. This is horror. And I actually thought it was YA at first, but that's just part 1. So well written. I definitely recommend it.
