Found in a Bookshop: The emotional, life-affirming novel you'll never forget | Stephanie Butland
3 posts | 5 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
The life-affirming and unforgettable new novel from the author of Lost for Words 'A delightful and original concept about how a second hand bookshop can heal a community' Katie Fforde 'What a lovely book - so assured and gentle, full of compassion and replete with astute observations of human nature and behaviour' Carys Bray 'A really moving read - with great book recommendations included, too!' My Weekly Loveday Cardew's beloved Lost for Words bookshop, along with the rest of York, has fallen quiet. At the very time when people most need books to widen their horizons, or escape from their fears, or enhance their lives, the doors are closed. Then the first letter comes. Rosemary and George have been married for fifty years. Now their time is running out. They have decided to set out on their last journey together, without ever leaving the bench at the bottom of their garden in Whitby. All they need is someone who shares their love of books. Suddenly it's clear to Loveday that she and her team can do something useful in a crisis. They can recommend books to help with the situations their customers find themselves in: fear, boredom, loneliness, the desire for laughter and escape. And so it begins. LOVE FOR LOST FOR WORDS: 'Standalone brilliant . . . A book to make bookworms of us all' ? ? ? ? ? 'Pulled my heart strings many times' ? ? ? ? ? 'Had me laughing out loud . . . and sobbing at the end. Will stay with me a long time' ? ? ? ? ?

This month‘s #bookspin is a proper lockdown book. The first I read and I don‘t know how to feel about it. I like the idea - in lockdown, people can mail in with their problems/situation and the bookshop „prescribes“ them some books. But there were too many character so the storylines stayed on the surface. And those who went deeper seemed too extreme. Also some of the backstories weren‘t resolved? ⬇️

yourfavouritemixtape Just found out that this is actually a sequel… which somehow explains the not-resolved backstory. And also the fact that it could have done with a bit more editing. 4mo

Pickpick

Beautiful but heartbreaking. Depending on your COVID experiences you may not be ready to read this just yet. It's setting is UK during Lockdown. People dealing with life in the Pandemic. And there are deaths. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig But then there is Loveday from The Lost For Words Book Shop trying to figure out how to keep her store afloat. She comes up with Book Prescriptions. Do you need books to help you escape, or sleep, or heal a broken heart? Loveday and her team will find you just the right book. It definitely a book for book lovers. 10mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig And to that Goodreads Reviewer who gave it 2 stars just because it included a Lesbian couple. 🖕🙄🖕 10mo

I‘m spending the long weekend with Coopy and the last little bit of this lovely impulse buy. It‘s the first proper pandemic novel I‘ve read, and it‘s a really affecting look at how a wide spectrum of York residents make it through lockdown, with books (and the shop that provides them) not as a cure-all but a powerful helper in hard times. Highly recommended to anyone who likes mosaic novels with a strong core.
