Charm City Rocks: A Love Story | Matthew Norman
7 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
When a single dad meets the former rock star crush of his youth, everything they thought they knew about happiness and love is thrown into chaos in this hopeful, heartwarming romantic comedy Billy Perkins is happy. No, for real. Its kind of his thing, actually. And why wouldn't he be? He loves his job as an independent music teacher and his apartment in Baltimore above a record shop called Charm City Rocks. Most of all, he loves his brainy teenage son, Caleb. Although not the worlds most traditional parent, Billy has plenty to teach his son about art and manhood before Caleb goes off to college. Margot Hammer, on the other hand, is far from happy. The former drummer of the once-famous rock band Burnt Flowers, shes now a rock and roll recluse living alone in New York City. When a new music documentary suddenly puts Margot back in the spotlight, she begins to realize how much she misses her old band and the music that gave her life meaning. Billy has always had a crush on Margot. But shes a legitimate rock staror at least, she wasso he never thought hed actually meet her. Until Caleb, worried that his easygoing dad might actually be lonely, cooks up a scheme to get Margot to perform at Charm City Rocks. Its the longest of long shots, but Margots label has made it clear that any publicity is an opportunity she cant afford to miss. When their paths collide, Billy realizes that he maybe wasnt as happy as he thoughtand Margot learns that sometimes the sweetest music is a duet.

I picked this up from the library without reading the blurb...it was definitely a surprise! Despite the fact the cover says "A Love Story," I didn't realize it was a rom-com. Yes, that's my own sexism on display. ?

That said, it was a cute, light-hearted read. I'm not a huge romance reader, but every once in a while I enjoy them, and this hit the spot.

Oh, and it was my #doublespin pick, so yay!

Super sweet romance story about a music teacher, Billy, and his teenage rock idol Margot Hammer, former drummer for a wildly popular rock band. Loved the slow burn and how their relationship developed so organically. I read this in one sitting. 4.5 ⭐️

Billy is a happy go lucky guy. He loves his son, his job and living in Baltimore. When his son arranges for him to meet the drummer who was his celebrity crush even he doesn‘t think she would ever be interested. Margot has been a recluse since the public combustion of her marriage and her band. The last thing she expects is to feel a connection to a cardigan wearing music teacher. Sweet and funny, like Billy this book just made me happy.

DivineDiana I grew up in Baltimore and most of my family still live there. Sounds fun. Stacked. 1y

I don't read a lot in the romance genre, but I am a music junkie, so I thought I'd give this one a shot. Hopefully it's more Daisy Jones & the Six and less 50 Shades of Grey.

Margot Hammer is the former drummer of the famous rock band Burnt Flowers which dramatically and publicly disbanded 20 years ago. She‘s divorced from her famous British actor husband with whom she shares a grown daughter (Poppy) and lives reclusively alone in NYC. Billy Perkins is a happy, cardigan-wearing self-employed music teacher in Baltimore with a college-bound son (Caleb) that he shares with his ex-girlfriend and her husband. When Caleb 🔽

robinb sets up a bogus meeting at their local record shop (Charm City Rocks) in order for his dad to meet his former crush Margot, things get interesting. Add in Margot‘s selfish but hilarious philandering ex-husband (Lawson), and you‘ve got the makings of a pretty good rom-com. I enjoyed this for a couple of reasons. Margot had pretty much given up her music when she meets Billy. He helps her see that being a drummer and writing music is who she is 🔽 2y
robinb and what brings her joy. And the humor (especially from the incorrigible “villain” Lawson) is spot on and wonderfully written. It‘s not perfect as there were some eye-rolling moments and too much bad language, but it was well worth the read. 4.25/5⭐️ 2y

This is a delightful book about piano teacher and single dad, Billy who runs into his long-time crush, rock star Margo. Time has passed but feelings haven‘t and Billy is once again enamored but her charm! Such a cute, heartbreaking and heartwarming story! 5🌟
