Looking Glass Sound
Looking Glass Sound | Catriona Ward
From Catriona Ward, author of The Last House on Needless Street, comes another mind-bending and cleverly crafted tale about a group of friends struggling to come to terms with the horrors of their past. DO NOT MISS THIS BOOK. Authentically terrifying. Stephen King on Sundial In a lonely cottage overlooking the windswept Maine coast, Wilder Harlow begins the last book he will ever write. It is the story of a sun-drenched summer of his youth, and of the killer that stalked the small New England town. And of the terrible tragedy that forever bonded him with his friends Nat and Harper in unknowable ways. Decades later, Wilder returns to the town in an attempt to recount that summer's events in his memoirs. But as he writes, Wilder begins to fear his grip on the truth is fading ... and that the book may be writing itself. Looking Glass Sound is a book about the stories that shape us, and how easily they can escape us, in the vein of Stephen King's Stand By Me. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

The first 100 pages of this were brilliant. Great coming-of-age story, then quickly turned into a serial killer who-dunnit. Then gets so unbelievably weird and confusing that it made 7 1/2 deaths of Evelyn hardcastle seem easy. Honestly such a disappointing 2/10. Could have been great! But wasn't.

Has anyone read this? It started out soooo good. Now it's fading a little...the time frames jump from talking about things day to day, to all of a sudden a few months later, or years. I can't quite figure out what genre it is...it's like a cross between catcher in the rye, the sun also rises, mix in a lil serial killer, some very frank bisexual curiosity, a manic depressive parent, abandonment, death, complicated bereavement. Not sure yet!

I had to think about this one for a day, but overall this book kept me intrigued for the most part. It is a very twisty dark journey about three friends and a mysterious ocean front cave. It really is best to not know anything. I can understand some people not loving this, as it starts as one story and gets very weird. I overall liked the ride, but I‘m not sure if I loved the ending. 4⭐️

I really enjoyed her previous books but this one just wasn't for me.
Started off strong and then it felt like a hodgepodge of genres, stories within stories, time jumps and plot twists that just didn't do it for me.
Just left me confused and annoyed.
Next!

Train reading. I'm three quarters of the way through, and officially have no clue what's going on in this. I'm hoping I'm supposed to have no clue what is real at this point in the book. 🤷‍♀️

I was not a big fan of this novel. I like strange, twisted novels, but this one jumped around way too much for me and I often found myself confused about what exactly was happening throughout the majority of the novel and to whom. The audiobook didn‘t make it any less confusing. The pace was slow and the narrators were monotone in their delivery. There was not enough inflection and, by extension, there was little to no suspense created.

I love the concept but the execution left something to be desired. The back half of the book, in particular, didn‘t engage me nearly as much as the first half, and in total the story left me wanting. I still love Ward‘s prose and style though.

The type of love I never want to know 💀. As Wilder‘s friend Harper aptly puts it: ‘books are cages for monsters‘, and this monster will lull you into a false sense of security, play with you, betray you, and just when you think you finally have it beat, it will pull you down into the depths of hell with it.

Cool cover plus some raves, so maybe I‘m missing something because I‘m deeply unimpressed. Bailing out almost halfway through, as this reads like bad YA to me and I just don‘t care to find out where it‘s going. I‘m guessing she‘s not an author for me.

What the heck did I just listen to? Stories within stories within stories. Ward never quite lets you get your footing. I kind of liked it though I feel like I missed things. Might work better in print.

"The human heart is deep and dark with many chambers. Things hide down here."

Holy shit. Ward has done it again! I read this ENTIRE book today, in what felt like a fever dream because once I started I absolutely could not tear myself away! ? It's so incredibly good! So many twists and turns and everything, and I mean EVERYTHING is a clue! When things started to come together right at the end I actually screamed aloud! ?

I fell in love with Ward‘s writing in THE LAST HOUSE ON NEEDLESS STREET, so I have been excited to dive into this one since first glimpsing its haunting cover! Set mainly in ME, this layered story first seems comprised of pieces that don‘t easily fit together, but by the end, I just couldn‘t wait to finish listening to my audio copy and read a physical one! Best to go in blind & buckle in for the wild ride made for book lovers, readers & writers!

🎧 Have you read The Last House on Needless Street? Did you enjoy the writing? The complicated twist? Yes? Then read this!!

One of my most anticipated books for 2023.

Brain Freeze without the deliciously sugarful ice cream.

If you like her writing style you won‘t be disappointed here! Go in blind! Just read it!

HOLY COW! I‘m over a MONTH behind in reviews!! So many good books! Will I catch up or skip …. We shall see! 5⭐️

In the way of Needless Street, nothing is as it seems in this book. I lost the plot a couple of times mainly due to tiredness! I enjoyed it though and like the authors style. I still wouldn‘t class them as horror though.

Cathythoughts I never finished Needless Street. But I want to try this one 👍🏻 1y

Bk5 of my #BookHaul is the new book from Ward. Set on the Maine coast, it‘s about an author & his memories. In a cottage overlooking the sea, Wilder Harlow begins writing his last book, the story of a sunny vacation when he was young & the tragedy that united him & his friends Nat & Harper when a killer stalked the streets of the New England town they spent their summers. Now he‘s returned to write about that time, but is he remembering the truth?

LeslieO That sounds so good! 2y
tonymp Just when I said to myself, “Self: after this horror novel you're going to read some other genres because you've been reading nothing but horror in 2023.“ Then, this new Catriona Ward came out and of course, when I'm done with my current horror novel I'm reading this one. I like Ward too much to leave it for later. 2y

Signed/numbered first edition.

32/1,000

The edges mimic the colors/background of the book.

I‘ve enjoyed this author‘s books so I purchased The Broken Binding‘s special edition.

Hoping this is a good one! ♥️
