Golden Bowl
Golden Bowl | Henry Jr. James
12 posts | 17 read | 17 to read
The wealthy American widower Adam Verver and his shy daughter, Maggie, live in Europe, closely tied through their love of art and their mutual admiration. Maggie's future seems assured when she becomes the wife of a charming, though impoverished, Italian prince. But when Adam marries his daughter's friend Charlotte Stant, unaware that she is the prince's mistress, the stage is set for a complex and indirect battle between the two wives. The brilliant Charlotte is determined to keep her lover, while Maggie is determined to protect her beloved father from any knoweldge of their shared betrayal. The acuity with which Henry James calibrates the four characters' delicately shifting alliances and documents the maturation of a naive young woman marks this as a magnificent achievement. "The Golden Bowl "was not only James's last major work but also the novel in which his unparalleled gift for psychological drama reached its height. Introduction by Denis Donoghue"

#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView Lovely prompts, really made me think
1. I do! Some writers do it better than others, of course
2.These two are among my favourites-both with fascinating antiheroines-the complicated, tormented Charlotte Stant, and femme fatale par excellence-Milady de Winter.

TheSpineView Great choices! Thanks for playing! 2y

By the end of the first page, I could tell that James liked to use 20 words (and as many commas) to say something that could be said in five. Red flag number one! I hoped it would improve but (spoiler alert) NOPE! I came to dread even picking up The Golden Bowl before I‘d reached the end of the first chapter. I finished it, with gritted teeth and LOTS of determination... Full review: http://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/the-golden-bowl-henry-james/

Well, after over a month I have to say that my latest #modernlibrarytop100 book was a resounding “meh.” I‘ve really enjoyed other books by Henry James but I guess late-period James is not my speed. If I‘m going to read 600 pages I would really prefer to know what‘s actually happened by the end. A book in which a father and daughter‘s spouses start an affair with one another should be a bit more fun than this.

A little blurb since today it‘s the birthday of Henry James .He was born in Greenwich Village so long ago it was an address of the well to do , pre bohemian.I remember loving the tagged book and also Princess Casamassima , I have many more to read , including Turn of the Screw which seems to be the one most people read or were assigned to read.

elkeOriginal Turn of the Screw is a trip! 6y

Almost painful to read, The Golden Bowl did pick up toward the last third of the book. I had a hard time loving the characters and wished they‘d all just come out and say what they‘re thinking!

It did have some very interesting symbolism with things seeming perfectly fine on the surface (the bowl), yet it was flawed underneath. It‘s difficult reading and you have to be patient.
