Long Illness
Long Illness: A Practical Guide to Surviving, Healing, and Thriving | Meghan Jobson, Juliet Morgan
4 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
A new, necessary integrative approach and practical guide to living with all long illness (autoimmune disease, chronic pain, inflammation, COVID-19, and more), from two UCSF doctors In 2020, a surge of long haul COVID-19 patients came to Drs. Jobson and Morgan's clinics and one thing was clear to them: We have seen this before. The pattern was strikingly similar to other long conditions: fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic pain, post?infectious syndromes, and autoimmune diseases. And that is because long illnesses manifest in similar ways. They follow patterns in the body as the result of inflammation, trauma, and toxic stress. Whether its chronic pain or COVID-19 or any of the myriad conditions that require long-term maintenance, people with long illnesses have long been invalidated by a lack of assistance and care. The public health crisis of long COVID-19 highlighted these inequities. Drs. Jobson and Morgan are on the front lines of research and treatment at UCSF; they have developed an integrative program that goes beyond conventional medicine, which struggles to understand long illness. Their approach uses evidence?based integrative medicine that addresses the whole person: body, mind, and spirit. Not only do they legitimizing long illness, they offer an unparalleled, holistic approach to haling. Drs. Jobson and Morgan empower readers by giving them expansive, accessible recovery tools: from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), traditional eastern medicine, and mindfulness practices, to emerging therapies, self?healing techniques, and cutting?edge research. They also offer support and validation, with survivor stories and places to journal and process woven throughout for an interactive healing exercise. By the end of this book, readers will be equipped with data, self?knowledge, and integrative medicine skills??the ingredients that accelerate healing from within.

Thanks to Hachette books for sending this spoonie a book on long illness. These authors go over common-sense strategies for dealing with your illness. They cover broad categories (like migraines and GI illness) with tips on finding and communicating with your care team. Then they cover what they‘ve found useful for patients in terms of treatment from supplements to exercise. This is more of a holistic book and won‘t necessarily help you ⬇️

Megabooks diagnose yourself, but I appreciated that these MDs shared ideas that look at chronically ill people whole people looking to live improved lives while living with their illness. #HBSocialClub 1y

Not even my Elizabeth Warren bookend has a plan for this over-ambitious TBR! I definitely won‘t finish all of these, and once again, I‘m surprised by the two chosen. The Guide I acquired this week from a hardcover sale at my local indie, Bluestocking Social in Evansville, IN. Love them! Long Illness is a gifted copy from #HachetteBooks, and this spoonie is looking forward to it! #HBSocialClub #bookspin #doublespin

Soubhiville That‘s a good looking shelf! But definitely too much to conquer in a month (for me anyway!). Enjoy your spins! 1y

I‘m getting books in about 3x as fast as I‘m reading them! 😂 Behind these books is a mystery bulb that my mom planted in the fall. Any guesses?

My #botm and #aardvark boxes have arrived, so I‘m very excited for those. Thank you to #HachetteBooks for the hardcover copy of Long Illness. As soon as I can get a breath to focus on my own issues, it‘s at the top of my list!! And I couldn‘t resist End of the World House from the library.

Many, many thanks to #HachetteBooks sending me this book about long-haul Covid and autoimmune conditions, two things that are the bane of my existence now! The authors, both UCSF-trained physicians, also cover other types of chronic illness. This is heading to the top of my February TBR! #HBSocialClub
