A Is for Bee
A Is for Bee | Ellen Heck
2 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
What letter does the word bee start with? If you said "B" you're right - in English! But in many, many languages, it actually starts with A. Bee is Anu in Igbo. Ari in Azerbaijani. Aamoo in Ojibwe. And Abelha in Portuguese. Come and explore the gorgeous variations in the ways we talk about familiar things, unified and illuminated through Ellen Heck's eye-catching, graphic scratchboard details and hidden letterforms.

Fun alphabet book attractively illustrated with animals who appear in a different place in a foreign language alphabet book than they would in an English book.

I like to check out the "Best of" kids' books at the end of each year, and this one was on several lists. It's a lovely riff on abecedarian books, in which A is generally for Apple in English. This time, as the title says, A is for Bee, because in some languages the word for "bee" does start with A. And Z is for elephant. Lovely graphic illustrations.
