Content warnings include child sexual abuse, assault, and rape; racism, including physical violence; and emotional abuse. These are not the only reasons for my rating, but they definitely contributed to my lack of enjoyment in the book.

Racism and abuse are addressed through two views in this heartbreaking story. Ella, an 11 yr old, has experienced far too much pain in her young life, and Ms. St. James, the only white character in this book is coming to terms with her exposure to racism through her father, a Klansman.
Set in Mississippi in the 60s, I felt the author did a good job of putting the reader in this turbulent time of history.
It's a difficult read, but a good one.
I thought the writting, particularly around time and place was super strong. It was difficult to read about the extreme racist in the novel. I also think that writing from a childs perspective can be tricky. In the end the plot did not hold together for me. I would read this writer again. 2.5 🌟 #52bookclub23 #doesnotfitotherprompts @Clwojick @BookBelle84 @jennifer80 @Librarybelle @triplem80 @AshleyHoss820 @LauraReads @KarenUK @britt_brooke
