2 AM in Little America Pb
2 AM in Little America Pb | Ken Kalfus
20 posts | 18 read | 9 to read
From "an important writer in every sense" (David Foster Wallace), a novel that imagines a future in which sweeping civil conflict has forced America's young people to flee its borders, into an unwelcoming world. One such American is Ron Patterson, who finds himself on distant shores, working as a repairman and sharing a room with other refugees. In an unnamed city wedged between ocean and lush mountainous forest, Ron can almost imagine a stable life for himself. Especially when he makes the first friend he has had in years--a mysterious migrant named Marlise, who bears a striking resemblance to a onetime classmate. Nearly a decade later--after anti-migrant sentiment has put their whirlwind intimacy and asylum to an end--Ron is living in "Little America," an enclave of migrants in one of the few countries still willing to accept them. Here, among reminders of his past life, he again begins to feel that he may have found a home. Ron adopts a stray dog, observes his neighbors, and lands a repairman job that allows him to move through the city quietly. But this newfound security, too, is quickly jeopardized, as resurgent political divisions threaten the fabric of Little America. Tapped as an informant against the rise of militant gangs and contending with the appearance of a strangely familiar woman, Ron is suddenly on dangerous and uncertain ground. Brimming with mystery, suspense, and Kalfus's distinctive comic irony, 2 A.M. in Little America poses several questions vital to the current moment: What happens when privilege is reversed? Who is watching and why? How do tribalized politics disrupt our ability to distinguish what is true and what is not? This is a story for our time--gripping, unsettling, prescient--by one of our most acclaimed novelists.

#BookSpin #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks #ToB23

The idea behind this book sounded so great, but the execution ended up being disappointing.

Following the meandering plot in this one became a struggle for me. While I do appreciate the vision the author had and his look into current American politics in this dark, futuristic tale, it was all a bit vague and repetitive for me.

squirrelbrain Great review - and I completely agree! 2y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! I've thought of reading this one, but a LOT of the reviews complain about it being vague and a bit directionless. 2y
Ruthiella Yup, yup, yup. Didn‘t work for me either. 2y

Bailedbailed

#ToB23 double bail. I‘ve read enough of these to know I‘m headed for so-so reviews at most so back to the library they go!

Ruthiella That‘s fair! As @Cinfhen writes #Allhailthebail 👍 2y
kwmg40 I managed to get through 2AM (but didn't especially like it) and I too bailed on Manhunt. 2y

squirrelbrain What @kwmg40 and @BarbaraBB said! 😬 2y
batsy Sorry Manhunt wasn't for you but totally understandable! I'm kind of intrigued by the Kalfus premise, but a lot of reviews have been not enthusiastic 🙂 2y

I don‘t get it. I guess the author wanted complacent Americans to feel what might make an American abandon all they know, most of what they own and make a new start somewhere where they don‘t know the language, the culture, etc. and where their legal status is precarious or even nonexistent. Didn‘t work for me. The book was both too obvious and too vague (we‘re never told what country the protagonist is in or what happened in the US.)
#ToB2023

Chelsea.Poole Agreed! I hadn‘t thought of it that way, but you‘re so right!! It‘s also way too obvious, while at the same time incredibly vague. 2y
cariashley Your review is spot on 💯 2y
Addison_Reads This is one I haven't read yet for the #tob23 and with all the so-so reviews I really don't feel like I'm missing much. 2y

squirrelbrain I didn‘t ‘get‘ this one either. It could have been so much better if one or two things were tweaked a bit. 2y
Ruthiella @Chelsea.Poole Thanks. I really would have liked more world building. That‘s what makes dystopian books interesting to me. 2y
Ruthiella @cariashley Thanks! Yours was too. 👍 2y
Ruthiella @squirrelbrain Yup, it left me wanting more, but not in a good way. 2y
Ruthiella @Addison_Reads You really aren‘t. Just read a couple of top rated Goodreads reviews and you‘ll have as much info had you read the book. 2y
jlhammar Great review! I‘m not very far in, but I don‘t think it‘s for me. Will probably bail. 2y
BarbaraBB I enjoyed the first half and then it became so vague and I wasn‘t really interested any longer 2y
Readerann Thx for the review. Will give it a miss. 2y
Megabooks Agree. Excellent review! 2y
Hooked_on_books Completely agree. I love the idea of this one, but the execution didn‘t work for me. 2y
RebelReader I didn‘t get it either! 2y
Cinfhen Agree 💯 premise was interesting but the author lost his way 2y
kwmg40 It seems like a lot of us felt the same way about this book! 2y
Ruthiella @jlhammar It‘s not a long book and it read pretty quickly, if you decide to stick with it. 2y
Ruthiella @BarbaraBB Yeah, I kept waiting for something to happen and then the book was over. 2y
Ruthiella @Readerann If you can get it from the library, I‘d say give it a whirl. But yeah, I wasn‘t impressed. 2y
Ruthiella @Megabooks Thanks! I did like a lot of what you suggested in your review about the face blindness! 👍 (edited) 2y
Ruthiella @Hooked_on_books Yeah, I was excited by the blurb, but it didn‘t deliver what I wanted. 2y
Ruthiella @RebelReader We are not alone in being flummoxed! 2y
Ruthiella @Cinfhen Yes, the concept was super interesting… 2y
Ruthiella @kwmg40 Yeah, that seems to be the consensus on Litsy! 2y
sarahbarnes So interesting that this one seems to be a miss for everyone. 2y
Ruthiella @sarahbarnes Yeah. There are more positive reviews on Goodreads though. 2y
batsy Nice review! It's really not one I'm keen to read but your review helps me to understand what I might be in for if I choose to give it a go. 2y
Ruthiella @batsy Thanks! I think discussion around this one might help me get more out of it…what I missed. 2y
BkClubCare Yep. I did enjoy the positive reviews and explanations which rewarded me for the effort. I liked this one actually but it did take work on my part. Weird. 2y
Ruthiella @BkClubCare I can see that. Other readers see other things. Mouth to Mouth was like that for me too. I read it one way and looking at other‘s reviews opened up other possibilities. 2y

Audiobook for #ToB2023…what did I just read? The concept was intriguing to me: “Little America” in an unnamed country where Americans are refugees and unappreciated by natives of said country. Ron Patterson is our unpolitical MC who spies on women, walks his dog, works, and recalls moments from the future civil war in US. Americans seek the comfort of big box stores in their new land. Too vague for me but I look forward to the commentary.

jlhammar I started this, but I get the sense that it will only be a so-so for me as well. I might bail. 2y
Cinfhen Agreed, the premise of this book was AMAZING but the execution was lackluster 🙄😬too bad the author couldn‘t deliver a fully cohesive story 2y
Readerann I probably won‘t get to this, but your review makes me look forward to the commentary. 2y

Hooked_on_books I felt the same way—great concept, poor execution. I was excited for this one and it disappointed me. 2y

I admit this book had an uphill battle with me because I am so tired of near-future dystopias, but -- honestly it felt like a collection of vaguely ominous incidents that never really added up to anything because they were all so hazy and nebulous. Not my cuppa. #Tob23

BarbaraBB I liked the beginning but it was a so-so for me too in the end 2y

I made Blueberry Pie with my niece last night, thus our “toasting” of our rewards. How I managed to find vanilla ice cream in the freezer was a wonder surprise! (Husband was out of town, I usually devour ice cream when he is gone.)

Earlier in the day, I finished the audio of this #Tob2023. I am glad I read it. Hoping the Tournament discussion will bring even more insight to what was happening. I have enjoyed the theories and ideas shared here 😊

Emotionally, this novel feels similar to An Island but doesn't capture its impact. Mostly I just feel confused. I don't understand the narrator's affliction or its purpose (unless it's just to show that it's impossible to tell who's on your side?), I don't understand the underlying conflict that's forced so many Americans into life as refugees, and I don't get Kalfus's overall point, but the book has some good scenes and isn't unpleasant to read.

Ruthiella “Isn‘t unpleasant to read” 😂 I‘ll take it! 2y

I am 1/3 of the way through this audiobook and I am actually getting a kick out of the story‘s confusing elements, the author‘s choice of craft, and wondering what the heck is happening. I have read some reviews by readers I admire who praise this and others that note big issues, and all are adding to my interest to pay attention. So far, so good. #ToB2023

Meh, another so-so one from the #tob shortlist. I know there‘s been lots of discussion around the MCs ‘face blindness‘ and I think it‘s to do with the disorientation of being a continually displaced refugee. However it made it very difficult to follow the storyline, particularly on audio when you can‘t flick back a few pages to remind yourself what‘s going on.

What were the judges on when they picked this shortlist?!

Ruthiella I‘ll definitely try to get this one in print. I know that the ToB organizers don‘t read all the books on either the short or longlist. So that‘s why we get a mixed bag o‘ books! 2y

rmaclean4 Thinking of skipping this one. I think I will wait and see if it makes it past the first round. 2y
sarahbarnes Another reassurance that I‘m probably going to skip this one. I really agree with you on the shortlist this year. 2y
Hooked_on_books They were smoking something strange, I think! And I thought the face blindness was bizarre since it was only for women. That felt sexist to me, as though women aren‘t important enough to recall. 😠 2y
LaraReads Sorry you didn‘t enjoy it. But great use of the prompt! ⏰ 2y
Megabooks Excellent review! 2y
jlhammar Hmmm, I've got this one checked out from the library, but not sure I'll get to it in time. We'll see. Maybe I'll just try a few pages and see if I want to commit. I've got Mouth to Mouth on audio up next. 2y

Like most others I enjoyed the first part of this book. The collapse of the US, the people seeking refuge in other countries: it is an intriguing and disturbing premise. However in the second part strange things start happening to Ron, the narrator of the story. I didn‘t get if he is just unreliable or if his circumstances are. Too vague, too disconnected to my taste. #ToB23

squirrelbrain This is up next for me (on audio)…at least it‘s relatively short! 😁 2y
Ruthiella I‘ll keep my expectations low. I‘m not even sure if I‘ll be able to get it from any of my libraries. 🤫 2y
sarahbarnes Great review! I‘m not sure I‘m going to read this one… 2y
Megabooks Fantastic review! The whole seeing different faces on women was an odd angle for sure. 2y
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain @Ruthiella @sarahbarnes Look at us, ToB fans, we‘re not even eager to read the books anymore! It‘s gonna be a weird tournament! At least we‘ll have a winner we‘ll root for! 2y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks Exactly that. I didn‘t understand that. Didn‘t he recognize faces, or did they really change, or did he just not recognize them?? 2y
Megabooks My thought is that it was to symbolically show his confusion and disorientation in his new surroundings, how he felt alienated from both the locals and other refugees, as well as a maternally embodied longing for his motherland. It‘s almost like he wanted to see America or his hometown in each woman‘s face but kept coming up short. Hopefully I‘m remembering correctly, but I‘m probably reading too much into it. 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 2y
BarbaraBB I think you‘re right about him wanting to see America is each woman‘s face, I thought of that too, but why? I felt I knew too little about his past to feel connected to this. 2y
Hooked_on_books @Megabooks @BarbaraBB I agree with you on that choice. It felt gimmicky to me, especially since he didn‘t seem to have a problem recognizing men‘s faces, just women. Which to me just devalues women. 2y
Megabooks @Hooked_on_books Barbara, I can see your point Holly. It is odd that it‘s just women, but I read it literally as he was looking for his motherland. I didn‘t feel particularly sympathetic towards him nor did I really under why he was running, B. The author hinted that he was in a conflict zone. I wonder if he was making it vague so we could see ourselves or refugees in our communities as the MC. 2y
Librarybelle I‘ll probably pass on this one 2y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks @Hooked_on_books That is an interesting thought Meg. If he wanted to write about refugees‘ feelings however, he didn‘t really succeed imo. He had to add this condition of not recognizing women and, like you stated: why was he running? Too much didn‘t make sense for me to connect to this possible meaning. 2y
kwmg40 I'm happy to read the comments here, as I too didn't understand fully all that was going on, and reading the interpretations is making me ponder these ideas further. I'm glad I read the book, even though it was frustrating and tiresome at times. 2y

I love this premise—the US has fallen into such disarray and violence that people are fleeing but few countries with take them. One US refuge is trying to find his way in these conditions. I found the storytelling here cold, which kept me at a distance. Plus, the protagonist has a condition that was a bit too convenient of a plot device and just didn‘t work for me. #tob2023

MicheleinPhilly Gosh, they really shit the bed with this shortlist. 😕 2y
Cinfhen Agree the premise was great but execution was a little shaky 2y
Megabooks Fantastic review. This could‘ve been a fabulous book if the execution was better. It was terrifying reading that people were using big box stores for jail and torture during the civil war yet somehow believable. 2y

sarahbarnes Great review and once again I‘m tending to think I won‘t read another book on the shortlist. @MicheleinPhilly really summed it up. 2y
Hooked_on_books @MicheleinPhilly You‘re not wrong! I will say, though, that I‘m about 2/3 through My Volcano and I just love it! So, there‘s that. 2y
Hooked_on_books @Megabooks It really could‘ve been good. I feel like the best dystopias are the ones that are close to where we already are with just a little distortion. And this one has those elements for sure. 2y
Hooked_on_books @Suet624 I think most of us would love to know! 2y

Kalfus's dystopian world in which civil war has caused many Americans to become unwanted refugees in other lands is thought-provoking and disturbing. However, I just couldn't latch onto any of the characters and found the plot rather plodding.

Not much reading this week partly due to a short vacay and partly due to what I had chosen to read. I finished 2 AM but I can‘t say I enjoyed it. I felt disconnected and maybe that was the point with the ambiguous memories, etc. 2.5 🌟 MV may be the right book but wrong time. I‘ll watch for other reviews to see if I should try again later.

I struggled with one, wanting to bail pretty early on but determined to finish it for #tob23. The premise sounded great- an American refugee building a life in the only countries willing to take him after a civil war in near future America. There are some interesting details but otherwise the purposeful vagueness left me cold.

I didn‘t love this book but god did it get me thinking. So how on earth do I rate it? Low pick I guess. 🤔 The MC is a future (dystopian) refugee from the US, where there is an ongoing civil war. He is pushed from country to country where, and this is where Kalfus lost me, the MC keeps mistaking one woman for another, constantly seeing ones from his past. Now, I kind of wondered are these women physical, almost motherly embodiments of home ⬇️

Megabooks the home he can‘t seem to find even in Little America, where he is surrounded by other Americans from his region. But I think Kalfus brilliantly brought aspects the refugee experience of many in the US to its own citizens, and that part I really appreciated. Cinfhen GREAT REVIEW! the repeating woman aspect lost me too. I like your explanation for her. I didn‘t love this book, either but I did find it compelling. 2y
Cinfhen Do you think he had face blindness? Or was the first woman in the apartment really the same woman at the very end, who was indeed Amanda from his HS?? That part was super confusing and im not sure it really added anything significant to the story. (edited) 2y
BarbaraBB Great review. I‘m on the fence about this one. I think I‘ll wait whether it makes the shortlist 2y
squirrelbrain Hmmm, me too @BarbaraBB ! I was waiting until next year anyway, as it fitted a #52books prompt but that is easy to change. 2y
sarahbarnes Great review! Still mulling over whether to read this one. 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen ugh! So totally behind on this. Yes, it definitely could be face blindness. I don‘t think it was the same woman, but I read it a bit more symbolic and that each was standing in for a part of America he couldn‘t access in the other countries. Like a part of his past he longed for and couldn‘t reach/remember. 2y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain I‘d only recommend this if you want to read the whole shortlist (if it makes it). Didn‘t set my world on fire. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y

#ToB23 longlist 🧡 In a futuristic America, a new civil war has broken out & now people are fleeing in droves to foreign countries to seek refuge. Tables are turned as Americans are now looked upon as unwanted migrants, forced to live in squalid conditions in districts called “Little America”. The premise is smart but our narrator is so vague that it‘s hard to really feel how dire this new reality is. Grim and unsettling. 👇🏼

Cinfhen There‘s also a side plot involving a girl from his past who seems to be haunting him. At times confusing but audio had me enthralled. This book BEGS to be discussed. @Megabooks @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain @Ruthiella @Chelsea.Poole @Hooked_on_books @Suet624 @sarahbarnes @Addison_Reads @RebelReader @Micheleinphilly I hope I‘m not forgetting anyone
