If We're Being Honest
If We're Being Honest | Cat Shook
17 posts | 21 read | 16 to read
For fans of We Are the Brennans by Tracey Lange and All Adults Here by Emma Straub, Cat Shook's debut novel If We're Being Honest is the snappy, smart, heartwarming story of the Williams family, and the sweltering summer that rewrote their history. When Gerry, the beloved Williams patriarch, dies suddenly, his grandchildren flock from across the country to the family home in Eulalia, Georgia. But when Gerry's best friend steps up to the microphone to deliver his eulogy, the funeral turns out unlike anyone expected. The cousins, left reeling and confused, cope with their fresh grief and various private dramas. Delia, recently heartbroken, refuses to shut up about her ex. Her sister Alice, usually confident, flusters when she spots her high school sweetheart, hiding a secret that will change both of their lives. Outspoken, affable Grant is preening in the afterglow of his recent appearance on The Bachelorette and looking to reignite an old flame with the least available person in town. Meanwhile, his younger brother Red, unsure of himself and easily embarrassed, desperately searches for a place in the boisterous family. The cousins' eccentric parents are in tow, too, and equally lost--in love and in life. Watching over them all is Ellen, Gerry's sweet and proper widow, who does her best to keep her composure in front of the leering small town. Clever and completely original, If We're Being Honest reminds you that while no one can break your heart like your family can, there's really no one better to put you back together.

If we're being honest, it was a little too “sweet“. This is a book where very few characters say something straightforwardly without euphemism and I get that this is in part to reflect the Georgian way but it also comes across as the author's reluctance. It all ties up too neatly to; I would think with such revelations there would be more emotions.

…no matter what happens, and I‘ve seen some things happen to some people, no one that I know has ever regretted starting a family ❤️

Picturing her little house made her realize her homesickness. It struck her that this was good, this idea that she would be happy to get back to her life…Maybe it wasn‘t self-protection or self-sabotage; maybe it wasn‘t that she was afraid of change. Maybe she had just built a life she liked 🫶

Gerry the beloved patriarch of the Williams family has passed away and his loved ones and friends have come together to celebrate his life. When his best friend takes the podium to give a loving eulogy, he ends up revealing Gerry‘s biggest secret. As the family reels, they soon discover that they are all hiding secrets and some may change things for the family forever.

I really enjoyed this book and couldn‘t put it down. Recommend!

This was a roller coaster of a family drama with secrets coming out left, right & centre. Bouncing between joy and sadness, this had some great one-liners that had me laughing out loud and feeling ready for a cry.

I‘m loving this family drama but I have a pet peeve. There is constant eye rolling. Every character rolls his/her eyes at something. There was 3 eye rolls on one page! I suppose it says something about the family dynamics, but c‘mon, where‘s the editor.

LeslieO Recently I read one book where everyone was blushing (his face turned red, she felt the heat rising up her neck, blah blah) and another where everyone was meeting or avoiding someone‘s gaze. On every page. Seems like lazy writing. Ugh 2y

If We're Being Honest is an extended family drama debut novel set in the small town of Eulalia, Georgia. The story follows the Williams family as they gather for a funeral and then a wedding over the course of one week. We follow each family member as they deal with personal struggles, family dynamics, and their grief. Their stories range from funny to heartwarming to sad. It was well written and enjoyable. I couldn't put it down. 4 stars

This novel has a lot going on; there are so many smaller narratives that make up the story, allowing for different themes and character types to exist within the bigger picture and message of the novel. At times it did feel like things dragged. McInerney brought life to Shook‘s characters. I enjoyed the inflection (although the pace was a little too slow) as well as the emotions I could feel coming from many of the characters.

If We‘re Being Honest by Cat Shook was not my cup of tea, and I knew this going into it. When I originally requested this via BookishFirst, I thought I would enjoy it and be able to mark of a square on my 2023 Bookish bingo card (for category: book from a genre you‘ve never read before) if I won a copy. However, once I won I began to have doubts on whether I could truly enjoy this book. I considered contacting BookishFirst to have them cancel my w

I REALLY enjoyed this story. Another one that‘s #LightNotFrothy perfect for summertime. A family gathers for a wedding and a funeral where over the course of one week numerous secrets will be revealed. Audio was delightful 😁♥️🎧

keithmalek Cat Shook? Is that a pen name, or is it real? 2y
Cinfhen Right?! I know another “cat” but she spells her name with a K @keithmalek - it was such a fun book - Cat could be short for Catherine and Catherine Shook sounds semi plausible 😂 2y

#DailyAudioWalk I had a dentist appointment so I opted to walk… is it just me or does the silly string clump look like a heart ?!! 💙 Started a new audiobook today and I‘m really enjoying it! As a family gathers to bury their beloved grandfather, father, husband a long kept secret is exposed at his funeral. But as it turns out, that‘s not the only secret amongst this group.

Ruthiella Sure, it could be in the shape of a heart…🤔💙 2y

I received this book in the mail today from Celadon Books. This is a physical ARC of a book that was released on April 18, 2023. This book sounds interesting to me. I‘m looking forward to reading it. This book came with a book club kit. This would be great for book clubs to read together. I used to be in a book club in real life and if I was still in that club, I could suggest this book to them.

Someone referred to this as a family dramedy and I think that is an appropriate description. It combines humour, drama and a bit of romance as a family deals with various crises and revelations. I did find keeping track of the numerous characters a little difficult and should have made a list to refer to. In spite of that, I still enjoyed the story and the family dynamics felt quite real to me. I think it could make a great movie. 3.75/5 stars

This was a good listen for a road trip! The opening, where a family gathers for their beloved patriarch‘s funeral and his best friend reveals a shocking secret, had us in tears…laughing! While there were aspects that fell flat for me, this is a pleasant, funny, and heartwarming debut with endearing characters that makes for good if not heated discussion. If you like family dramedies, give this one a try.

This family drama opens up with a lifelong secret being revealed during the eulogy of Gerald Williams, Sr. Leaving behind a wife of 60 years, 3 children & 4 adult grandchildren, the whole family remains in Eulalia, GA for the week between the funeral & the wedding of a family friend, dealing with the aftermath and their own grief. The family & its dynamics come to life in a genuine way. A little less head-hopping would‘ve made this even better!

When the beloved Williams family‘s patriarch dies, the scattered clan returns to GA for his funeral, only to discover a jaw-dropping secret during the eulogy. As they grapple with this new revelation, they all have their own life issues to face as well. While hilariously dysfunctional, this family has some life-changing decisions to make…forgiveness, sexual orientation, independence, pregnancy, possible infidelity, drug/alcohol abuse…🔻

robinb there‘s a lot to unpack. While I didn‘t necessarily agree with some of the rhetoric on the hotbed issues in this one, it was definitely well-written, with realistically defined characters and great humor. Although it did seem odd that EVERYONE was having such weighty issues at the same time…guess that‘s life.
I‘m sure this one will do well in the mainstream. 3.5/5⭐️
