This was my Christmassy read this year and it was a little disappointing although very easy and quick to get through which is nice for holiday reading. I found the language, whilst beautiful and impressive, was overdone and actually too detailed. It was actually a really short, simple story with only a few things happening but everything and every action was described in such detail that it took a really long time for anything to happen. Christmas in London. Journalist Daphne King is determined to make her mark at the newspaper. A new production is about to start at the Theatre Royale, Daphne is thrown in at the deep end when catastrophe takes place, the lead actor dies on stage. Daphne‘s uses her investigative skills to try and solve the murder. Set in the 1939‘s I loved the old style language and style of the book. An interesting, historical murder with dashes of comedy.

Tiny ereader (not a phone! That's an e-ink screen! It's so small and cute) that fits in my tiny handbag. Lifesaver while my wife's run into the shop to do a bit of shopping because my sister's dislocated her ankle. Means I get to read a bit more of this, which I've been gulping down. Apparently this is my jam right now.

Well, I wandered off again. BUT a major timesuck has been removed from my life, and it's a new year/fresh start, so let's see!

I started 2023 by reading Splitting, a book about headaches by Amanda Ellison, which was very simplistic, and Headed for a Hearse by Jonathan Lattimer, an American mystery story I didn't love. I finished 2022 reading Ada Moncrieff's Murder Most Festive and enjoyed it, so I'm hopeful that this will be equally fun.

12th finish in the #WinterReadathon, a short and quick read, but I like the main character, and the detection process is well laid out.

All stuffing, no turkey: cozy Christmas murder by numbers

This was promoted as 'A modern rival to Agatha Christie' but at her very worst, Agatha is far better than this. It is hard to articulate the issue, but this book feels like a murder mystery by numbers. The author has thrown in all the ingredients needed but hasn't considered that you actually need to weave an interesting plot with 3-dimensional characters. Very disappointing.

Good. Even though it took a long time for it to get going the pace does pick up and even though it does the ending just comes so suddenly that it just feels rushed. Also even though the setting is at Christmas and set during a production of A Christmas Carol it can be read during the whole year as it doesn't really give Christmas vibes.
